Taken from the PDA website.

This beggars belief, what was this moron thinking of, certainly not his driving.
Doing 150mph is bad enough, but on a phone as well!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope he swings for this.

I accept he did not cause or have an accident, and he probably thought he was quite safe in his driving, but who, if wanting to join the carriageway, would expect anybody to be doing that sort of speed.
I'm just glad he got caught before there was an accident.

This is part of the problem though isn't it. I am extremely dubious about raising motorway speed limits to the extent that 100mph plus is legal. Why? Because idiots like this guy think they are skilled enough to be driving safely, and won't be told otherwise, probably not even by a trafpol.

What an (_!_)hole. I hope they throw the book at him. That surely deserves a ban and a test re-take before the idiot is allowed out on the road again.

I read how this story was reported in two newspapers yesterday (Scottish Daily Record and The Metro Glasgow edition).

Both concentrated on the speed issue and the reporting of the mobile phone was secondary.

The Metro even quoted an AA spokesman who claimed a car was almost impossible to control at that speed. The fact that 1000's of drivers do it every day in Germany without ill effect may have escaped him, plus the manufacturers of these cars spend thousands of hours making sure the cars are controllable at these speeds, but no matter.......

I discussed the articles with some of my colleagues (well aware of my SafeSpeed opinions) and asked them where the danger came from in what the particular driver was doing. They were all indoctrinated enough to believe the speed was the danger!!

AAARGH!!

I'm not saying it may not have been an irresponsible (definitely illegal, but that is another issue) speed, but the mobile phone is BY FAR the most shocking aspect of what this idiot was doing.

One colleague replied to me - 'It's people like that who will have a blowout and collide with and kill some poor soul travelling safely at the speed limit'!

I emailed him the safespeed link that afternoon.

PS. The driver mentioned in the report was caught early on a Sunday morning in a Bank Holiday weekend. :x

And how many times do you see adverts for cars that are electronically limited to 155mph.
The designers Know how fast their cars are capable of going, and the car is perfectly safe at excessive speeds, but it is not the car that causes the accident, the car just blindly follows the instructions of the driver.
Also, the design speed of the road has to be taken into account, but most roads(major) in this country are not designed for much over the existing speed limit.
I will travel quite happily at 80mph on motorways and good dual carriageways, but only if the conditions allow for it.

This guy was totally over the top. Hard to say which was the more hazardous, the speed or the phone.

I agree entirely, and you rightly dissociate the speed from the actions of the driver. My point is that speed itself is not inherently unsafe, which is the whole safepseed message.

However, my colleagues are indoctrinated enough to believe that faster=more dangerous, and the blowout comment and the mention of 'safe legal limits' prove that the dangers of that assumption have an environment to thrive in.
