I don't find the default smilies supplied with PHPBB to be very good really. A number of them are unclear and we're missing out on stuff like:

(Those come from Pistonheads, with thanks)

Does anyone know of a superior and sensible smiley collection that's in the public domain? I know there are zillions of smiley collections - that's the problem.

Another one is

http://www.clicksmilies.com/

However I must say personally an excessive use of animated smilies can be offputting Image

Nope, have to say I'm not fond of the new set of smilies, particularly this really irritating bouncing green one :D which replaced this one Image

Also it would have been better to add new smilies rather than change the images for some of the existing ones, which in some cases changes the meaning as well.

I'll change it. I thought I'd find and install a replacement set of smilies in an hour or less. In the end the bloody job took about 14 hours straight - and I'm not really happy.

This one: :D was a pretty desperate choice when I couldn't find anything better, however, as it happens I did subsequently find something better.

Work continues...

OK. I'm roughly satisfied by the smiles. If anyone finds any of the basic smilies ambiguous or ugly, then let me know and we'll find something better.

I'd honestly expected to find a royalty free set of smilies that would do just about all that was required. But there are zillions of smilies - mostly filed by function rather than set - and most of them are just rubbish.

I'll keep my eyes open for anything better and I'll do tweaks as required.

Note that there are 89 smilies currently installed. You have to hit 'view more emoticons' from the post message page to see them all. Clicking on one in that window pastes its code directly into the edit window.

This is my favourite: :bunker:

I still think the "sad" one :( looks more like "grumpy"

I prefer the old phpBB one Image

or alternatively the MSN one Image

This is good though:

:flamethrow: Image

OK. I've got this one wrong haven't I?

Seeing smilies on pages of smilies led me to missestimate the sizes. Seeing the smilies in use in the forums, the larger smilies used for standard functions are too damn big.

:D This is too big.

 This is the right size. I also prefer the yellow to the gold.

I'll do some more work and get it right. :)

And that one looks (as my maths teacher used to say of my graphs) like it's been drawn with a poker dipped in soot!

If you could get all the "basic" ones to be the same size, colour and definition as  then you'd be on the right track.

As you say, pistonheads seem to have the best default set - I also like the "chin scratching" one...

How am I doing now with the smilies?

Are there any annoying ones left in the basic set?

Are there any really good ones missing that I should add?

I've captured those two.

The dancing banana is 64K bytes.

My first computer had 1K byte (A Nascom 1 for anyone with a really long memory), and for years 64k was a dream to aspire to.

My first modem was 1200 baud and they told us that 2400 baud was the absolute limit for a telephone line.

Oh dear, it must be that time of night - he's reminiscing about "Classic Computers"! :hehe:

My first exposure to computers was a Commodore PET at school, which overwhelmed me so much I failed GCE Computer Studies!

Actually I loved the programming side of it, but couldn't be bothered doing the stack of coursework that was required. Preferred to spend my free time exploring all the other distractions that rear their head when you're 14.

So nothing's changed really!

Q. In our day it was just old motorbikes and stuff, so at least once you were confined to barracks there was a fighting chance you'd get your homwork done. How on earth do kids these days get anything at all done, now they've got t'internet?

That's funny. I was wondering how we got anything done before we had the Internet. :scratchchin:

The best thing about the internet is that it contains everything you ever needed to know.

The worst thing about the internet is that it contains everything you never needed to know.
