Did you see Road Wars on Wednesday night? I watch it whenever I can. It's interesting to see the types of risks that desperate drivers are prepared to take to avoid justice. But I wonder if it's in danger of losing credibility just as "Police Camera Action" seems to have done.
Last night, "Pat and Carl" were featured as two cops patrolling the Thames Valley. Their message was to stress the importance of wearing seatbelts. "Carl" was seen gesturing to errant drivers by tugging his own seatbelt, and at least two motorists were spoken to for not wearing theirs. "It's there for just one reason", proclaims Carl... But in the next segment, we had another team. I think the driver was "Jim". Jim is on a high speed pursuit. But guess what? Jim was not wearing his seatbelt...
Shortly afterwards, the view from the police car was shown, driving along a narrow country lane in pursuit of a car which had failed to stop. Lee Boardman stressed that
"driving along narrow country lanes such as this one at 60mph is highly dangerous". Just as he got to the word "dangerous", the police car was passing a

sign. I laughed my arse off!

In this and the sister programme, "Street Wars", we have narrator Lee Boardman very much towing the official line, including "one third of all road accidents being speed related". In Street Wars, he heaps praise on the achievements of CCTV and the police for cutting crime dramatically, but almost in the next breath announces that there's been a 20% increase in knife crime in the past two years.
