56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

Does the operation shown in that diagram look right?

Looks like a lot of work for a mere GPS satellite!

are gps sats even set up to act as a comms relay ?

i can beleive a network of nice modular ANPR camera + GPS position .... with each camera transmitting back to the data centre.
the clever bit happening back at the data centre tracking plates against positions & mapped limits etc.
this would make it like an auto-configuring specs (specs3 ?) system.

just re-read the article..... its only the image which mentions sending data to the GPS satellite..... poor journalism i expect.

Not as far as I know

GPS position of what? You can't use GPS to find the position of a vehicle without a receiver onboard. And you don't need a GPS to find the position of the cameras - a decent map will tell you that.

This system is feasible. The ANPR cameras record numberplates and are in known locations. They don't transmit to the satellites and, in fact, you don't need GPS unless the cameras are mobile ones. The system works out average speed between locations and compares this to the possible routes and speed limits between the two locations.

However, just because you CAN do something does not mean that you should.

What would happen if I had a spare set of numberplates and I and a friend manually passed them through two cameras miles apart at the same time? Confusion at the 10,000mph car?

GPS position of what?

The camera itself, thus forming part of a time over distance system.

I think these cameras are meant to be more 'portable'.

yup exactly... presumably part of the hassle of setting up a specs type system is the design & locating of the cameras.
GPS hardware is probably pretty cheap in relation to the rest of the kit so including it and removing that hassle (stick up a camera and leave the system to work out the rest) sounds a good option... and would allow the network to be augmented & expanded easily.

i can't fault the engineering of an elegant solution there :whome:

Another reference is Here (some photo's) ...

Many more links Here too.
The SpeedSpike / Pips Technology Here ... with their TOLL link :( Here.

It is utterly shameful that so much effort is going into encouraging this free for all over speed enforcement. Since when is commercialising road safety in the interests of the Public !
