Now if someone inadvertently leaves the road, they'll hit a tree instead of serenely rolling into a field.

Saying that, it could help reduce any effects of glare from the sun.

Trees planted in Norfolk speed cut scheme

Research shows the trees could knock up to 3mph off drivers' speeds

A scheme which aims to stop drivers speeding through villages is up and running in Norfolk.

More than 160 trees have been planted on rural roads in in Martham, Mundesley, Overstrand and Horstead in an "experiment" to stop drivers speeding.
It is hoped the trees will create an "avenue effect" and encourage drivers to slow down.
Oak, field maple, birch and hornbeam have been planted in the £70,000 trial.
All 163 trees, and 1,443ft (440m) of hedges in Martham, are expected to be planted by the end of March.

All four villages taking part in the trial had a history of speeding problems, Norfolk County Council said earlier.

Ahha sound engineering - albeit in about 10 yrs time !
Making drivers think is excellent.
I like the idea of it funnelling as you approach the town (Martham). :)
It will make the road potentially more dangerous and less with winter shadows and protection (less snow, but more localised micro-climate so possibly more ice or damp ....)

True Steve, but I see that there is still a fair bit of room between the road and the grass verge before the Tree Avenue.
At least a step in the right direction and (local reckless) motorists do have 5yrs (to learn that the scenery has changed) before any tree is old enough to stand up to a car with any serious force. To all new comers to the area it will be a tree lined road and treated as such.

Oak are big and wide trees can't recall how big the Maple grows but the Hornbeam is less large.

Someone wrote to the Times yesterday pointing out that the reverse will happen when leaving the village and people will speed up more than they normally would due to the spacing increasing. :)

Headline: Country lane speeds increased by irresponsible tree planting.

Nothing worse than trees during the autumn, A bit of sunshine and you get the strobe effect.
Not good if you have fits (passengers).
Freaks me out sometimes, just like a constant camera flash (Not the gatso type :D )

Headline ( prompted by SS2 Post) "APPROACH TO :30: MARKED AS SAFETY HAZARD ,County forced to heavily grit as road surface not heated by sun ,due to lack of sunlight ,by TREES( planted as safety measure some twenty years ago )"

Would be interesting if a motorist charged with speeding used this as a defence in court!

Thank you for a warm welcome Steve :)

There should be no defence permitted on speeding charges. SPEED KILLS.

(That is an example of my love of irony :welcome: )

I remember around 30 years ago, saplings being planted on a bend with a history of accidents as they would slow a runaway car with minimal impact.

Today those saplings are stout trees.

:welcome: Berwickst to Safe Speed.
(my oversight!)

If a vehicle cannot travel as far off the road and is stopped sooner that is probably safer - surely was that not their thinking ? Now of course they realise that gravel traps help to scrub off a lot of the speed prior to any impact so would we not really be safer with gravel straps and 'soft impacts' like hay bales (I realise these are a serious fire hazard though).
I do understand that they are trying to slow traffic by psychology and that I do like as it increases the self interest to obtain the right behaviour that becomes safe. Danger is recognised and appropriately adjusted for.
