Story goes ( be it truth or not ,I don't know),that during the late 70's , NATO came across a USSR aeroplane radio, and stripped it to find it was full of valve /valve technology .According to the tale, this provoked great amusement in the investigators ,till someone mentioned EMI .
What was not disclosed was that the main UK battle tank Radio of the time had as it's main elements a Valve in the transmit circuit, and a protective valve circuit in the receiver .( It also bad specially designed knobs on the controls, to prevent damage by squaddies boots )

I can't help but think this tells us more about the length of the MOD procurement process for new kit than the value of old technology.

From the stories I heard ,prior to joining a certain firm making said kit - they were mighty surprised that Generals were still capable of making decisions on what they say as futuristic kit ,when no other firm could compete - but saying that , the "OLD" TECHNOLOGY was still used for a lot of years past it's sell by date - don't forget that "bottles" ( valves to our younger readers) , don't suffer from the trauma experienced by semi conductors /chips when exposed to EMI( the radiation from a nuclear explosion) ,and the "protective valve" was protected for what ...........................I leave readers to work it out .

Trouble is you can’t make a microprocessor to run Windows using valves; well maybe you could but you’d need a football stadium I wouldn't want to be the one to find and replace a faulty valve I think the national grid might need beefing up too

But the point on question was that although the nation's computers could be hidden,shielded etc from EMI- those electronics in an aeroplane or in a tank ,having the necessary aerial connection to enable them to receive comms could not be .They'd receive EMI as well as any wanted traffic, so had to be protected against any power overload with a self resetting electronic overload cut-out.
Any computer of national strategic importance could be shielded ,and run in a local environment,whereas the comms on a tank/aeroplane/warship required external signals .
