A jointly issued statement by Six organisations. Road Safety GB is one of the organization's. Statement seems to lack facts IMHO.

Article by: robert
Date: 29 Aug 2010

There's been a lot of talk about speed cameras this week with many organisations joining the heated debate as to whether some local authorities were right in their decision to turn their cameras off. Now that the government has ended central funding, it will be interesting to see how many other councils join the big switch off.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), The AA, the Institute of Road Safety Officers and the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety have joined six other safety groups to issue a joint statement.

The statement said:

We the undersigned agree that:

* Speed cameras help to save lives - an estimated 100 lives a year in the UK.

* Lives are saved by reducing speeding. Speeding significantly increases the risk of an accident happening; and also increases the severity of injuries in an accident.

* Cameras should continue to be used where casualty statistics show they are needed.

* Switching off cameras systematically would be close to creating a void in law enforcement on the road. Cameras currently account for 84 per cent of fixed penalty notices for speeding.

* Cuts might also threaten many speed awareness courses that give motorists an opportunity to learn about the dangers of driving too fast.

* While public spending needs to be cut, cuts must be justified by evidence. Cameras pay for themselves and currently make an important contribution to achieving compliance with the speed limit.

Signed:

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA): Tom Mullarkey MBE, Chief Executive

The AA: Edmund King, President

Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers (AIRSO): Graham Feest, Secretary

CTC - the UK’s National Cyclists’ Organisation: Kevin Mayne, Chief Executive

GEM Motoring Assist: David Williams MBE FIRSO, Chief Executive

Institute of Road Safety Officers: Darren Divall, Chairman

London Road Safety Council: Councillor Peter Herrington, Chairman

Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS): Robert Gifford, Executive Director

Road Safety GB: Alan Kennedy, Chairman

Interesting! I see it's only 100 lives a year now! I'm sure I read it was "1/3" somewhere...

And as for evidence, they'll get all the evidence they could ever need if they DO let them switch the cameras off for a couple of years! Maybe they don't want that though...

Ford just sent me a letter offering me discount AA membership now my car's a year old. That's just gone in the bin.

Yes, yet more evidence that you should have nothing to do with the AA. Does it stand for the Anti-automobile Association?

They very quickly and efficiently repaired my car this afternoon: so I will hear no ill spoken of them.

I once read that in their early days, AA patrol men used to warn fellow members of approaching speed "traps", it seems that their role has now reversed.

Yes, I think it's true. They had all sorts of secret codes - like if the patrol man didn't salute you, (or somesuch ritual) there was a speed trap ahead!

AND when ,next year ,you get a renewal of more than last year ,and ask why ( and ask again why new customers pay less ) - you won't begin to ask why "NEW CUSTOMERS PAY LESS , I did - never got a decent answer , so moved to another company .

PACTS which has singed the press statement list Red speed as on of their associate/member funny that.

Another company Road Safety GB has RSS as the sponsor of the flagship event of the year even more funnier.

Does the AA run speed awareness courses thanks to the SCP's?

They tried that on me last year and when I asked that question they gave me the new members rate instanter. That is an unfortunate business practice not confined to the AA and one that you have to be aware of - they will all give you the new members rate if you threaten to take your business elseware

as I remember ,from what my father used to say , it wasn't that they warned you -that would have been frowned on, possibly illegal .Instead all patrol men used to salute members ( who would have AA badge on front grill) ,except if there was a speed trap ,when they didn't .Don't seem to remember seeing a van on those days -they all rode bikes with side-cars .
