Birmingham’s largest bus operator has threatened to suspend a major service because crumbling roads means double deckers are getting stuck on speed humps.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

If claims for damage cost less than repairs then why would they bother to fix them? This is what we see time and time again when we privatise our services, the bottom line always wins out.

This is not a new problem by any means.

More than 50 years ago a major bus company threatened to withdraw services from certain routes in West Yorkshire, because they were suffering too much vehicle damage due to the dreadful state of the roads. At that time the West Riding of Yorkshire (as it was then known) was notorious for its neglect of roads maintenance.

It seems that most local authorities have now adopted a similar policy of neglect, albeit for more bloody minded reasons. :x

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I work for TrentBarton in nottingham. We had a similar situation several years ago.The local council, Broxtowe Borough, wanted TB to put new £114,000.00 buses on the Rainbow4 route.TB refused because the road humps in at the time were damaging the buses.TB would only put new buses on if the council replaced the humps. The council said no due to costs.TB said the old buses stay on the route.Sevaral months down the line, Broxtowe borough Council cave in and replace the humps. There are now nice buses on the R4 route.

Would have loved to be a fly on wall when blame for the local one was being discussed ---

When road humps first started being put in on one local council estate -Warks fire service ( according to local story) decided to see how it would affect their response times .So an appliance was sent out over the newly humped roads .Result -Warks fire service needed a new appliance ,and the humps were lowered . Strangely enough the "traffic calming" on the main through road consists of either road narrowing ,with a raised hump in direction of traffic ,or no narrowing ,with a raised divider in the middle and humps ( on line of travel ) on both halves .
