Why,

I have firefox and IE on my system. I can click on an IE bookmark and I can then load up firefox, click the same location, connect, and even scan through a few pages while IE is still trying to make the initial connection!

Therefore it is not my broadband connection. It is IE.

What is happening and (appart from deleting IE ) what can I do about it?

(While aI am at it, on another PC I have an annoying little pop up that keeps repeating suggesting that I compact my outlook express e-mail messages to save disk space. Fine but I dont have outlook express installed! How do I get rid of the message (No check boxes to unclick or anything unfortunatly))

What version of IE do you have?
Apparently IE8 is meant to be the fastest IE ever, but I generally find Firefox 3.5 to be twice as fast on the same machine

Others have had the same problem.
Use of google toolbar has proven in many cases to lead to slow loading, as does a slow connection to the home page selected on tools/internet options.
Then again, it could be malware or a rootkit etc.

It's having all the junk extras turned on in IE8.

When you install, it asks you if you want various things turned on. Say no to everything (accellerators, filtering, suggested sites, updates, etc). If any programs offer to install Google Toolbar, say no as this has similar useless options.

IE8 works just fine without all this stuff.

Give Google Chrome a try. Faster than IE or Firefox. But, like all Google apps, a bit rough round the edges.

But whatever browser you have, the speed of access these forums is entirely dependent on the wretched performance of the Safe Speed server.

I have now upgraded the Safe Speed server and it is faster - have you not noticed - I did announce this ...here.

Are you or anyone 'still' finding that it 'slow'? As no one had complained, I took it that people were happy.

I have donated slightly more than the cost of an ordinary member's subscription.

My complaints about the speed of the forum where based on my historic experience and because the slow periods were intermittent the improvement was not immediately obvious.

Maybe partly.

But, if it's partly down to slow DNS servers then when you clicked the bookmark in IE you made Windows do the DNS lookup, the result will be cached and when you click the bookmark in Firefox won't need doing again.

Other slowness in IE8 I have noticed is due to the way it operates it's anti phishing filter, it seems to deny you the whole page until it has scanned everything, and is very slow at it.

Then again I rarely use IE8, probably 80% of my IE8 use has been to download another browser, the rest for testing.

My Connection was running very slow, I tried opera and firefox but still running slow.
I got a virus !

Quite often symantec ( http://us.norton.com/security_response/index.jsp) have individual removal tools for removal ,but not in this case .Problem is that they know it as trojan/zlob .But there is a list of signatures etc on there .

It also installs by default.. AppArmor and IPTables

I heard the government also were talking of switching too.

When i tried puppy linux i had some problems with Adobe flash player not working not sure if that issue was ever resolved.

Now i'm considering trying a dual boot with Linux mint.

I’d like to say something about my computer, PC, or laptop and the internet and the way we record things which are so digitally and pathetically ephemeral...

If I say here and now that this is all a load of it actually doesn't matter because it wouldn’t last these days!

As I found out recently on a program called 'Click', if you think your data is safe and life-long, on a memory stick, CD, DVD or other modern media - think again!

The safest and most reliable media to date has been paper and pen, a chemical photograph or old video even!!!

Who here hasn't lost a digital picture? Be honest now, as you file and name/rename a file in a folder where PIC13224 is repeated and asks you “do you want to replace?”

So you look at it and the tags which tell you the date and time and you look at the file size and ponder on what to do...

So you create yet another folder and duplicate files or make another name change and finally relegate it to the miscellaneous1/2/3.....



I have pictures going back so very long, long before I was born, taken with old technology and you know what? They are still here, in the here and now, and they're HONEST!

Can you say that of anything you are doing or saying today?

I very much doubt it....

I have a heap of external hard drives hiding behind my monitor (mostly 1TB). Everything (expect my film collection) is backed up, some of it is double backed up <smug>
I still have all my old stuff from a full decade ago, when I first owned PCs.

It always amazes me how in this day and age of iffy hard drives (the most ignored yet the most failure prone part of any PC) how so few people back up their cherished files

Drives are so cheap these days; 1TB external USB drives are available from Tesco for £55, smaller capacity drives for less.
