There's an interesting poll on the IAM website about the desirability of off-road driving courses before young people reach the legal driving age, see here:

http://www.iam.org.uk/iam_polls/

You will need to register to respond.

This seems less loaded than some of their previous polls.

Of course the likes of BRAKE are strongly opposed to such courses as they seem them as "encouraging driving"

It let me vote without registering . But the real point ,was made on the last question -ABOUT NEW DRIVER TRAINING - overwhelming case for some form - ,but let's hope that this is something done without recourse to another compulsory cash disincentive to driving .
As I keep on harping about ( and MM also does) -once the kids pass rest - a RESPONSIBLE DRIVING PARENT ensures that they're safe and secure on the road . It worked for lots of years before the Gov't "invented driving standards" , that ,IMHO is the cause of the decline of UK driving standards .But failing parental supervision ,in this day and age - what is going to replace that ???

You have to understand that ANY initiative from the Government or related ar**sucking organisations is about discouraging driving.

Just take the National Trust. Despite most of their best properties being miles away from anywhere in the country they list all alternative public transport possibilities before finally saying "car parking available" when they know perfectly well that almost all their (overwhelmingly middle class) visitors come by car. I wonder if their Director General visits all the properties on Sundays by bus?

Graduated licences are all about delaying (possibly permanently) young people being on the road.

Malcolm - that is my greatest worry - another test ,after the driving test. ( to see if they can be trusted) . Never mind - it's another money spinner .

And without the car, they would have no mass membership.

I would like to add to the comment on the National Trust but it is so far off topic that I dare not risk the moderator's ire. :(

How about a 'quote this as the first post in a new thread button'?

Which I should have used to make this post, except I would not then have had to.

We used to have pre-driver training, it was your dad showing you how to drive around a quiet field/carpark/disused airfield.

Ah -the good old days ,and after you passed the test , he took you out and showed you how to drive . Then mentored you -perhaps this is why newbies had less accidents all those years ago .Added to which ,we had the missing link - good old fashioned Police -be they traffic ,handing out advice to newbies ,or old fashioned Sergeants kicking ass - another thing missing from roads today .

Yep, fond memories of driving through a blizzard, one cylinder not firing at all and another starting to miss, my dad staying calm and explaining I had to keep the revs up to stop the car from stalling and still drive smoothly on a snow covered road.

Er, I didn't make any claim.

Botach, a question isn't a claim. There is no reason for weepej to produce a 'source', simply because he sought a follow up to your own claim.

Can you substantiate: "...newbies had less accidents all those years ago"

Not immediately - but the direction of the Government impetus( several campaigns to target younger drivers), ( and the line of the topic of this article) certainly points that way .My reply was a counter to the usual weepy one of not providing an answer ,but a question.
