Private Speed Camera Tests Underway
Private speed cameras are coming to a road near you… with operators carrying out final tests on the mobile units.
98News has learned that 1500 roads around the Country are being designated as ‘speed enforcement’ zones, with road signs indicating where the re-named, ‘safety’ cameras, will be operational.
It’s hoped the ‘Go Safe’ initiative will lead to a fifty per cent increase in compliance with speed limits.
Gardai say the locations will be based on road safety data and published on the Garda.ie website. The vans, which will be officially launched next month, will be staffed by private employees for 6000 hours a month.
Speaking exclusively to 98FM’s Crime Correspondent Louise Byrne, Assistant Commissioner John Twomey denied it was a money-making idea saying, “There is no targets for them. The costings of the initiative is that these people are paid by the hour, so there’s no initiative for them in terms of volume or returns. The sole objective is to keep people alive.”
If they really want people to crash less then they are never going to achieve this through using masses of camera enforcement. What a sad situation, all those people's lives disrupted and in some cases ruined, and even the possibility of injury and death. In fact causing some of the very things that they claim to try and resolve! Where is the data to show that cameras save any lives ?
