Quote:
Women drivers can pay more than £80 a year extra for car insurance than men once they hit 60, a study has found.

Historically, women have been known as more careful drivers than men, so allowing them to get away with paying less to insure their cars against accidents and bumps.

However, research suggests that women suffer a drop off in their abilities behind the wheel once they become pensioners.

The tipping point appears to be 60 with men proving to be safer and more expert, with the result they end up paying less than women.

A Which? spokesman said: ‘Women may think they pay less than men for car insurance, but in fact the reverse becomes true as they get older.’

The consumer group used a price comparison site to get quotes from five leading car insurers for a man and woman of 60 with the same car, same address, no-claims history and driving experience.

However, they found it could cost a woman as much as 28per cent more than the man in the same circumstances.

Can't say I'm surprised, really

After 60 the difference will tend to diminish in which men tend to drive higher mileages and at more risky times of day.

The point has also been made in discussion on this on another forum that anyone doing under 6,000 miles a year has a relatively high accident risk as they're not doing enough driving to "keep their hand in".

Surely their are two opposite factors at work their? The lower the mileage the less exposure to risk; but the higher the mileage the higher the skill needed to avoid risk. I can't guess where the two curves cross.

Strangely enough ,Peter - I've just renewed my insurance , and trying to keep my costs down , try to miss out journeys, and to try and help me do this have looked at reductions in mileage . I now ( at 63, and in all but name retired)qualify to be accepted as an even better risk by one aged folks insurance - where mileage reductions mean lower premiums. I did ( for a laff) stick in 3000 - to get another reduction . And , my daughter has climbed on the band wagon - it appears that even if I never drive her car - adding me as a named driver gets her a hefty discount ( on her old car ,it pays the VED). Now as an Entrepreneur, not entitled to work ( or face penalties) -can I make a "nice little earner" ,getting folks to add me to their policies ( and charging a percentage  )

Folks -I'm open to offers -   ( got 15 years NCB, 44 YRS CLEAN LICENCE ,no convictions ( and none pending).

Sorry - offer only open to blood relatives . :D

I wonder if this change in relative risk is down to men's annual mileage dropping as they hit retirement?

The old "men are a worse insurance risk than women" thing doesn't - I beleive - take in to account mileage. In fact I believe per miles travelled, women are a slightly higher risk all the way up the age range.

Men probably travel further on average in their working lives (pure guess), so as they wind down to retirement, I imagine the relative risk of the sexes evens out, then reverses.

...and then there is the proposed equality legislation which threatens to stop insurance companies using gender as a factor in setting premiums.

It is said that young men will see a dramatic reduction in premiums whle girls will take a big hit. In reality, we all know that, if this goes through, everyone will be charged at the male rating.

Read an article yesterday , which said that everyones insurance premium, would be 10% less if it wasn't for allowances made for the ambulance chasers.

Given that there is supposed to be no discrimination on the grounds of age either I guess that will be an 18 year old male too.
