Gone in a flash: Thieves rob van of speed cameras

Quote:
Red-faced motorway contractors watched in horror as bogus workers stole their van – containing speed cameras worth £32,000.

The thieves struck inside a Highways Agency compound close to Railway Road in Hollinwood, Oldham.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said the driver left the vehicle with keys still in the ignition.

Two thieves posing as workmen in high-visibility jackets were seen to get into the car and drive off.

It is understood eight temporary speed cameras worth a total of £32,000 were inside the vehicle.

The cameras were being used to control traffic flow during resurfacing work on the M60 between junctions 19 at Middleton and 23 at Ashton-under-Lyne. Detectives are now studying CCTV.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “We can confirm that one of our contractors’ vehicles was stolen from a Highways Agency compound in Hollinwood just before 11am on Tuesday morning.

“The contractors were working on the M60 19-23 resurfacing scheme and the van contained a number of pieces of property, including equipment used for the works, such as speed cameras. It would appear that this was a highly-organised theft, with the men posing as workmen in high visibility jackets, but it was recorded on CCTV.

“In taking a Highways Agency vehicle in this way, these men have effectively robbed the taxpayer of thousands of pounds worth of public property and we would urge anyone with information to contact the police.”

Anyone with information can call Greater Manchester Police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

 Mustn't laugh :|

Keys being left in the vehicle means not covered by insurance either I guess.

I do realise that budget cuts have probably hit the SCPs hard, but stealing equipment is not the answer

£3000 a camera :scratchchin: , i think they were probably CCTV rather than laser cameras or specs, no doubt they will be found in some travellers camp as security cameras

The newspaper might have got the 0's wrong of course. They do say speed camera's and considering that most are worth about £32K each it was possibly multiple's of this!

I was watching a program the other day, which showed just how much latex 'face masks' have improved. In these days of so much CCTV where does one stand if one used an alternative face ?
If people are allowed to have religious berkas, then what would stop anyone from deciding to use a mask too ? That way no CCTV will really help unless they happen to use a car at some other location and so on ...
I do not approve of theft on any level.
I dare say this action might have delayed the camera use, and so from my perspective this will likely have made the road safer for longer, before the cameras are installed (now) later on.

My guess is the SCP in lost revenue.

Just drop a speed limit to an absurdly low level, like they have on the A38 Birmingham City Centre from down from :40: to :30: on stretches of three lane carriageway in places, and erect a speed camera.

They will recoup their loss by the end of the day - guaranteed! :x

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

.

This is merely an observation .

Good few years ago we had serious yob problems, and some of us installed CCTV . After a few weeks, the same group re appeared ,with hoodies/ gonk hats/ balaclavas et all . Same group ,same behaviour( to those who could recognise the bodies, but on court we'd have to swear to it and be cross examined by their solicitor).Only way of getting a conviction - grab one , do it with out infringing on their rights ,and wait for a PC . Bit like cars with false plates ,really .
