School crossing guard, 75, struck by vehicle in Sugar Notch roadway
Published: December 22, 2010
A Sugar Notch crossing guard suffered a broken leg and back injuries Tuesday morning when a car hit her on Main Street in the small borough, her husband said.
Raghline Elmy remained at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township as of Tuesday afternoon and will have a plate inserted into her injured leg, Henry Elmy said.
The incident happened at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, he said, as a bus carrying Luzerne County Head Start students was stopping on the street.
The driver, 78-year-old Agnes Munley of Sugar Notch, hit the crossing guard while driving "in a daze," Sugar Notch Police Chief Chris Pelchar said. Raghline Elmy had her reflective vest on and the stop sign out, he said. Munley will be cited with failure to drive at a safe speed and failure to obey an authorized person directing traffic.
Raghline Elmy, 75, has worked as a crossing guard in Sugar Notch for 25 years, her husband said.
"We never had an accident here, thank God," Henry Elmy said. "But, you know, it's just a freak thing."
Can't say that I agree that it was a 'freak thing', a common inattention accident. I wonder if she was watching the stopping bus and stopped checking the road? Seems very likely.
