Thames Valley Police took him to Oxford police station after he was stopped in Abingdon Road in the city at 2pm on Christmas Day, and after a rest, relatives took him home. He was unharmed by the ordeal.

A police spokesman told the BBC it was "nice the story had a happy ending".

A 'humorous with hindsight' story, but I am posting this because I picked up on something potentially iffy.
I thought ANPR cameras were meant to discard data of non-offending vehicles, instead of logging and retaining all journey details on a database?

I think they can keep everything for a short while in the first instance then purge the rest. I don't know what the initial period is. I'd guess at something like 28 days as it is useful to have access to everyone's data initially.

His plate was possibly flagged as he had been reported missing and therefore the system would record sightings?

If they were recording his whereabouts then how come it took three days for them to 'find' him?

I had initially guessed he wasn't reported missing straight away; even then, I believe a person has to be missing for at least 24 hours before they can be considered as such.
Once flagged, I would estimate that he was pulled over quite swiftly.

At each hit, by the time it was logged, he had moved on - in random unpredictable patterns.

The answer to that problem is MORE ANPR cameras, so that the direction of travel could be determined. :shock:

I believe the weather at the time and his age were reasons for concern, hence his speedy posting as a misper. and ANPR flag.

There is a lot more detail about this on a foreign news site somewhere - I'll see if I can track it down later.

The data is held for two years, although this is to be extended to five years shortly.

You should consider that any and ALL cctv/video units are capable of being used as anpr data providers.
