Drove from Walsall to Sutton Coalfield today, which is a run that I haven't done for at least ten years now and of course there are a lot more pointless 40 and 30MPH limits, that never used to exist but on bright yellow signs, was the wording, "speed limits life (or lives, can't remember)" under every new speed limit sign, it's obviously so catchy I can't remember it properly but can anyone explain what it means?????

Perhaps one of our roving "road safety experts", like GS or Weepej, could enlighten me.

All this tightening seems to have produced a widely used coping strategy.

1. Drive everywhere unfamiliar at 50mph.

2. Know your local unclassified roads, check them for white vans, and then enjoy them to the full!!!!!!!

Found this snippet from BRAKE toaday.........

"It is clearly time for action. Brake calls on all governments to:

* produce digital speed limit road maps of their country, using this as an opportunity to reduce limits when they are too high (most particularly, reduce limits in towns and villages to no more than 20mph and limits on single carriageway bendy rural roads to no more than 40mph or lower as appropriate);
-require vehicle manufacturers to equip all vehicles with ISA technology suitable for a mandatory ISA system;
-make ISA mandatory, introducing it with an effective marketing campaign to explain its safety purpose;
-make speed limit signing very clear on all roads so drivers are fully aware of the limit;
-develop more effective speed advertising campaigns, broadcast more frequently at prime time, explaining that limits are limits, not targets, and drivers often need to drive well below limits depending on circumstances, and addressing rural roads, urban roads, and different kinds of drivers. ........"


I like the bit about "bendy" rural roads being limited to 40MPH or less (probably the ones with fluffy bunny wabbits and woolly sheepie weepies will be lower still)..of course, BRAKE do actually realise that these are "limits" and not "targets" so rural travel could realistically, be a low as 20MPH, as it "should be" in towns and villages (according to BRAKE), so why not just pressurise the government for a 20MPH blanket limit for the UK?

I would suggest the best thing would be to send the members of brake on an advanced drivers course, they may then actually know something about what is entailed in driving safely. From their comments it would appear they clearly do not have a clue at the moment

Yes, as soon as you have to say that, it's pretty much an admission of failure before you start!

"Why do we have speed limits"?
"to keep us safe it's dangerous to exceeed them"

...except when it's dangerous NOT to exceed them!

What I can't understand is how they're going to get people to select an appropriate speed for the conditions? - (a concept which I'm all in favour of, by the way)! SURELY they can't be relying on the motorist's skill and judgement? I mean, if you could rely on that, you wouldn't NEED to lower the speed limits would you?!

if Brake continue to talk a load of b0llocks they will undermine their argument and people will stop listening. Hopefully.

Even the most anti private transport person would shirley concede that people need to move about and if you hinder their progress with stupidly low speed limits that are there for no good reason they will be ignored and your campaign will look pathetic
