An inch seems a bit much, to be honest! That would mean 2" in diameter! Did his mudguard move with the wheel or was it on a part of the frame that stayed still? All I can think of is the wind moving it at speed and bending the screw closer to the tyre. The car tyres I was talking about only grew "just" visibly (maybe 1/4 - 1/2", but I wasn't that keen on getting close enough to measure)! Modern tyres seem to be stiffer in every direction, so I guess they don't "grow" as much.

I may have exaggerated a bit Mole, it was a long time ago, but I remember it certainly wasn’t something you would look at and think “that’s too close”. Also, as I say and I think you agree, modern tyres do seem stiffer so maybe not too much of an exaggeration..

Actually, I didn’t tell it very well. It was a mudguard flap which he bolted onto the bottom of his mud guard. So it wouldn’t have moved closer to the tyre or maybe, if anything, the force of the wind would be trying to push the mudguard further away from the tyre unless there’s some weird vortex deal going on. Any vortex professionals here..

I remember seeing a biker going along on a very wet day, only about 20-30mph, and the rain coming off the back wheel was going straight up beyond the mudguard and sucked back on the rider as he was moving. Egg-sucking time: This is because as the rider and bike moves forward it creates a vacuum which the water is drawn into like a black hole. A similar force is at work on the cross section of a birds wing which we have copied on aeroplanes.

Next week, ‘Why toast always falls on the buttered side down”.

Dear Uncle Tone,

My question for you this week, on "question and answer time", is this....

Why do gorgeous women always go for ugly blokes with no sense of humour? ........ :D

 Well It's usually a fat wallet or big todger, or both. How I ever got married I'll never know. :)

On "Ask Grabs" I'd like to know why it is that all the languages in the world look like gobbledegook except for numbers :?

I keep meaning to Google that one :D

At least you've only got the one question. With me, the question is not only how, but also why :(

Hey, that's my friend you're talking about. If you have been unlucky in love, I'm in the same gigantic club mate :(

I know so many couples who are miserable or have been unfaithful I'm glad to be single TBH. Better to be single and wonder what good loving may be just around the corner than stuck in a loveless relationship with a boring old hag.

Well that's what I think and I'm only wrong twice a week on average. :D

On saying that, I'm told by my skiing mates, that my German gets better, the drunker I get, when in Austria...my theory is drinking the local beer helps the local tongue....

Unfortunately, short of winning the lottery I'm stuck with it. :(

Well, I respectfully disagree mate and I would dearly love you to have been in my shoes on the good days I have. If I may call upon my own personal experiences, I know there is someone out there for everyone if you are prepared to drop your guard and if you really want to find it. Seriously, I have seen it more times than I care to remember. I have a true story or two...

I may have mentioned that I work in the caring profession

Love match #1. Many years ago I saw, for the first time, a dear lady who, as my Rehab doctor at work describer her, you would describe as "hideously crippled". This was about eight years ago now I would say. Despite being wheelchair-bound and needing everything done for her she leads a great and fulfilled life. She cannot speak and uses a system to manage a computer. http://www.eyegaze.com/

Her husband, a fine and handsome gentleman and as healthy and able-bodied as they come helps her and they enjoy a loving, kind, respectful and faithful marriage. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I found out he married her in that condition. (I thought they would have met when they were young and she developed a degenerative condition and he stuck by her side. Not so at all.)

Love match #2. A man I met early on when I started in The Health & Care Service had a brain stem stroke at the age of 30 or 31, (I can’t remember exactly). He was married and has a lovely son but this life-changing event condemned him to a life as a vegetable and his wife soon went off the scene. He cannot talk or indeed do anything except communicate and operate his environment via an Environmental Control System, which is where I come in use with the use of some great products. http://www.possum.co.uk/ & http://www.rslsteeper.com/ in conjunction with the one I mentioned above.

His carer fell in love with him and while he may not be able to live a life like you or I could or can, it’s lovely to be loved and it can happen to absolutely anyone, anytime in life, and the only time love dies for you is when you turn your back on it. It is there, for everyone, but it doesn’t come knocking on your door and goodness knows you are likely to get burned along the way. But when you find it – it’s the best feeling on Earth! And it may sound strange coming from me but it can come from the love of another human, the love of life, or your faith in God. (Had a tear there as I was writing that if I’m honest)

I know you are loved just as we all are

I drifted. I must be a mod nightmare sorry.

"I shall pass this way but once...." And if I'm on my motorbike it could be pretty damn quick! :D

Take care all.

Love Tone Image

When I was married and a TV engineer, we had a customer who was in a wheel chair, who was quite attractive, with one of the nicest personalities you could wish for and to be honest, if I hadn't been (fairly happily) married at the time, I could have fallen for her.

Sadly, I think you may well be in a minority Mole and you are very lucky; in a minority and exceptional place I wanted to be in but never found - or maybe I just gave up trying...

I also think there was a ‘generalisation thing’ going on there/here.

I'm just assuming that because he's ugly and with no sense of humour that he's married to an ugly woman...lol only joking, Mole....

Getting back to bikes and speedos ... no no no ... not those lil skimpy tight swimming trunks (can't do appropriate smiley - no javascript on this browser - but I would if I could)

Anyway ... I've got a bitsa this and bitsa that motorcycle with bits mostly dating from the 60's and 70's. It has a cable driven mechanical speedo driven from the rear wheel, think the wheels etc. came from a 70's Triumph Bonneville. So not all cable driven speedos are driven from the front wheel. Can't think why anybody would drive it from the rear wheel? sure makes for a long cable run, but there ya go.

A Triumph Heinz 57 eh? :P

I'd love to see a picture of that Zippo; I've got the image of a mechanical Frankenstein in my head. Does it have two bolt-like mushrooms sticking out from the frame? :D

(Please don't flame me :bunker: )

This photo was taken many many years back. Strange, most things look better in photos but this actually looks a lot better in the flesh.

And another Frankenstein concoction :D .... this time a Yamaha RD250, monoshocked, with swing arm and shocker from RD250LC, and a 350 top end fitted.
