As the dash for cash takes off once more, it appears that each area is free to set the charge made for attending the Speed Awareness Course.

From various County Council and Partnership websites, I have made a note of the costs of various courses.

In no particular order....

Kent £85
Cumbria £70 (£75 on Sundays)
Norfolk £84
South Yorkshire £85
Thames Valley £95
Surrey £73
Staffordshire £75
Herts £85
Beds £91.83
Lancs £90
Lincs £75
Warwickshire £80

So for £70 you can dash through Cumbria at up to 86 mph, OR if you don't mind some points on your licence, just £60.

Most police forces adopt new speeding guidelines

Most police forces in England and Wales have adopted new speeding guidelines that allow motorists to do up to 86mph and avoid points on their licence.

It means drivers can pay to do a speed awareness course instead, if caught at up to 10% above the limit plus 9mph.

At a meeting of the Association of Chief Police Officers in January, it was announced that 37 out of 44 forces had signed up to the new system.

Critics say the rules are a money-making exercise and allow law breaking.

'Educational experience'

Previously, only those travelling at up to 10% above the limit plus 6mph could be offered one of the courses.
But the amendments were agreed by chief constables at a meeting of the Association of Chief Police Officers in January.
For a 30mph zone, the upper limit for a speeding course would be 42mph.
This would rise to 86mph for motorways and other major roads, although the official limit remains the same.

ACPO said the figure at which a course could be offered was a decision for individual forces, and not all would make it available for higher speeds.
Drivers can only attend one speed awareness course in a three-year period.
ACPO said the increase in courses for drivers had been backed by road safety minister Mike Penning.

The police organisation said the changes would allow m[url]ore drivers to "undergo an invaluable educational experience rather than receive driving licence penalty points and a fine".

'Important element'
A spokesman said: "Over recent years, the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads has fallen significantly, reducing both the toll of personal tragedy and the cost to the public purse.
"This reduction has been achieved through a combination of improved engineering, enforcement and education of which safety cameras are an important element."

At the start of the month, speed cameras across Oxfordshire were switched back on eight months after they were turned off.
Funding was withdrawn for 72 cameras and 89 mobile sites last August as part of budget cuts in the county.
But police said deaths and serious injuries on the area's roads went up following the cameras being switched off.

Money for the cameras to be introduced has come from speed awareness courses and backroom savings.

Lancashire didn't wait for ACPO, they jumped the gun back in March of last year!

It concerns me that the courses appear to have no consistency are run by different groups and people, vary in length and only those 'caught' have the enforced education. The fact that they have only committed, in some cases a technical infringement not necessarily any safety issue (esp in Av mean speed limit set areas) means that they are forcing 'educating' on a particular group who may not obtain the best benefit from this 'education'.
Who regulates the groups who 'teach' ? I hear now that IAM are running some.

The whole logic of this defeats me.

It's not the people just over the limit that need the awareness training, it's the nutters way over a safe speed.

Oh, I see. There are a lot of 36mph punters to take ££££s off and only a very few gross speeders.

Yep the logic is follow the money.
People who speed do not necessarily need any 'training'.
What is 'awareness training' anyway? With no quality control, or consistency who is to say that any of them do any good whatsoever, since many might miss the whole point (of what is going on).
Then why is there only 'training' after committing a 'technical infringement'? If it is about true road safety the information and courses will be available prior to profiteering.

Agreed.

No they realise that they have been loosing 'customer's, so, not only is there an increase in the speed entrance level, but also the types of courses too ... (more on this soon), as rumour has it that there are additional (further infringements) courses to be offered soon.
