Chris Huhne says speeding allegations 'incorrect'

Chris Huhne MP: "These allegations are simply incorrect"
Lib Dem minister Chris Huhne has said allegations he asked someone else to take his penalty points for a 2003 speeding offence are "simply incorrect".
Downing Street said the prime minister had "full confidence" in Mr Huhne after it emerged police were investigating whether an offence took place.
The findings will decide whether a formal inquiry is launched.
The energy secretary said he welcomed the police investigation.

He said the allegations had been "made before and been shown to be untrue".
"I very much welcome the referral to the police as it will draw a line under the matter," he told BBC News.
"I don't want to say any more than that, I think the police can get to the bottom of this."

'In the past'
A senior Lib Dem source told the BBC that Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg had met Mr Huhne on Monday discuss the weekend's allegations, which Mr Huhne denied, and that he retained the Lib Dem leader's full confidence.
Tony Blair remained prime minister while he was investigated, I imagine Chris Huhne can just about cope with being energy secretary”

Asked if Mr Huhne could stay in the Cabinet if the police do formally investigate him, a Downing Street spokesman said: "It has happened in the past."
Mr Cameron was asked if he had confidence in Mr Huhne at a press conference on the government's planned NHS shake-up. He said Mr Huhne had denied the allegations.

Liberal Democrat party president Tim Farron told the BBC's Daily Politics show that he did not think Mr Huhne would have to stand down from the cabinet if there was a full police investigation into the allegations.
He said: "If there's an investigation, there's an investigation. But he denies it. Tony Blair remained prime minister while he was investigated, I imagine Chris Huhne can just about cope with being energy secretary."

'Action where necessary'
Det Supt Wills was charged with looking into the allegations after Labour MP Simon Danczuk lodged a formal complaint with police against Mr Huhne after claims surfaced in newspaper stories following an interview with his estranged wife Vicky Pryce.
Essex Police said: "We are aware of allegations around a speeding offence which is believed to have occurred in 2003. A senior detective from the Kent and Essex serious crime directorate has been appointed to establish if this offence took place and the allegations around it.
"We take allegations such as this one extremely seriously and will take action where necessary."

Mr Huhne, MP for Eastleigh, is Energy and Climate Change Secretary in the coalition government - and was narrowly beaten to the Lib Dem leadership by Nick Clegg in 2007.
He has been in the spotlight recently for his criticism of the Conservatives over their behaviour during the recent campaign over changing the UK voting system - which saw the two government parties on opposing sides of the argument.
He confirmed last year he was splitting from his wife of 25 years, economist Vicky Pryce, and was in a relationship with another woman.
His office has denied the allegation about a speeding offence dating back to 2003, when he was an MEP, saying it had been made before and been shown to be untrue.

My take...

His estranged wife is sticking the knife in, as people often do in 'all's fair in love and war', on a matter he told her about or she found out for herself. (Do I need to insert allegedly?)

Time will tell, but he sure knows how to be laconic and feck off quickly when confronted with a 'difficult', but perfectly reasonable, question from a respected BBC interviewer from a, (yet another?), minister with 'nothing to hide'.

Ho hum... :scratchchin:

A cynic detector, that would be useful. :)

If the PM has "full confidence in him", that's the kiss of death. He may as well just come out with his hands up! "Full confidence" is what PMs always seem to say just before someone is forced from office!

Ain't that the truth!

We live in a bull shite world. I'm not offended by the BS, I'm offended that they think I/we are stupid enough to believe it.

I still don't know how they get away with it in GB but my guess is apathy and subjugation.

WIP...

Ain't that the truth. :( It's funny how people can swear their undying love one minute, and take you for everything you've got in the next...

But, OTOH, some women will suffer horrendous abuse for years with barely a peep - "But I love him"

Sorry, just getting that off my chest.

Understand it, been there, done it, suffered it, big time!!!

It works both ways with the “I love him/her” routine. I’ve seen broken women and broken men, (me and others),

But, (I'm sure we agree), it isn't about women, it's about love and relationships. If I was gay I'm sure I'd hate all men because Roger was a bitch and he had eyes for David. (I hope people know this is purely hypothetical).

A cupid’s arrow take-outer, that would be useful. :D

Who's to say what has gone on behind the closed doors in the Huhne's household. I'm sure the media will feast on it soon enough though, whilst I wait for my suspicions to be proven right or wrong based on his reaction/aversion to the BBC rep...

It's hardly surprising really.

The sensation we know as 'falling in love' is quite simply our brain's reward centre giving us a large dose of dopamine in order to 'encourage' us to reproduce.
The neurological effect is identical to what we get from snorting coke.
And we will literally kill for our next fix, and heaven help anyone who stands in our way - like soon-to-be ex'es, for example.

Perhaps they should bring in a specific offence of driving while under the influence of love. (only half-joking there)

Apologies for getting even more OT

Well I thought that was interesting Pete; I think you’d be good on QI. :)

The problem any person in a position of power has is that old nugget about power being a powerful aphrodisiac, (or was it money?).

Yesterday it was Paddy Pantsdown, Clinton, Prescott... Tomorrow it will be someone else who just can’t resist biting the apple of temptation, chewing the banana of lurve, licking the peanut butter off someone else’s toast...

I feel hungry now. :D

I guess we’re all programmed to do these things but our moral compass either makes us succumb or not. Ah, don’t you just hate them blasted morals. :P

All the following is just my opinion.

I'm very happy that Chris Huhne is being exposed. He is a typical socialist member of the Lib-Dems being very wealthy and a climate change enthusiast. This gives him a lot of time to push his ideas onto the general public while being insulated from their effects himself.

Cameron's less than ringing endorsement will be quickly reversed when all this stuff turns out to be true. His wife seems to have agreed to swear to it on oath so it will be interesting to see how he reacts.

Huhne is arrogant, self-serving and not a nice person.

Glad to see that you are no pre-judging the case, Malcolm.

IF Huhne is found guilty of PtCoJ, and jailed, then his co-conspirator can expect to be right there with him.

If it is the Ex Mrs Huhne, then she will be jeopardising her own career too.
Of course if it turns out to be the NEW Mrs Huhne, then she will have killed two birds with one stone!

Surely the authorities are guilty of baiting the hook when they send a NIP which states "If you were not the driver of your vehicle, then you must nominate the driver." Unless it is a Truvello, there is little hope of identifying the driver!
I know of a couple who innocently named the wife - it was the family people carrier, on a work day (he had his own work van) so they simply assumed it was her driving it.
Weeks after, they got a letter from the garage where the vehicle had been filled up with fuel, pointing out that the driver had left a wallet behind... HIS.
He had borrowed the wifes normal vehicle to take a relative to the airport, and simply overlooked his brief use of the car!

Regarding Malcolms ringing endorsement, I have to say I agree with this sentiment...

Isn't that all too often the case?
Our teaching assistants in Cumbria are being expected to swallow huge cuts in pay, while their top bosses continue to earn far too much money, and take no cut at all! :x

Leaving aside for a moment the issue of whether he's a nice guy or not, how the hell have we got into a situation where a law (and its enforcement practice) have got to the point where even members of the government not only flout them but try to cover their tracks? What was that slogan? "time for change"???

The bigger the lie, the more it will be believed. This one just isn't big enough which is why no-one is believing him.

I'd just like to see him squirm because I'm sick of double standards coming from politicians. To add insult to injury they always come back into office or write a book and make sh1te load of money just like the other arrogant nob I can't stand who thinks a teapot can have many cups, Archer. :x

I predict a best selling book from him after he’s been convicted along the lines of ‘How I sped from office’, just £19.99. Signings from June 18th to 19th at Waterstones in Birmingham.

Good point Mole! Where's their moral compass and what message does it send to us mere mortals.. Oh, I know! Do as we say, not as we do. :x

David Laws, Lib-Dem MP who made false expense claims, is finally being punished. By being given a week off work on full pay :?

Could this be that because people see conviction by fixed penalty as being a trivial offence (hence the conditional offer) that they don't realise that the penalty for Perverting the Course of Justice is the same when it involves a speeding offence, as it is if it involves a fraud or murder case!

AND, it is SO EASY. The system gives you a piece of paper pre-prepared with a means of committing the offence - the NIP, which suggests that you could nominate another driver if you "were not the one driving at the time of the offence."

WHEN does a murder suspect ever get offered a chance to name another person for the crime? :o

Moral Compass???
Don't they know that you mustn't keep a compass near a magnet? POWER, MONEY and INFLUENCE are powerful magnets to these people.

I once read that a solicitor is merely the larval stage of a politician!

Huhne has previously been banned from driving on totting-up including the offence of using his hand held phone while driving. In view of the other thread on here, what do people think of this?

He really is an idiot as he is a multi-millionaire and could employ a driver. In fact, it is quite surprising that he drives himself as he is so full of his own importance that a driver would seem a logical step. Oh, I forgot he has to go on his own so that he can visit his mistress in secrecy.

He is the MP for Eastleigh where I used to live and my experience of him there was not good. As for pre-judging, well, on the balance of probabilities I think he probably did it. Let's wait and see.

Maybe he and Strauss-Kahn should have a get together.

At any time he is being questioned under caution; or if he chooses to give evidence at his trial. "It weren't me guv, it were some other fella."
