Escort Introduces New High Tech Radar Detector
Written on June 15, 2011 by James Lavern - Filed under Automotive Technology

The maker of the world’s best radar and laser detectors, ESCORT Inc. has announced the release of the new PASSPORT 8500ci Plus custom installed radar/laser detector. The undisputed leader of radar detection technology and other premium automotive driving accessories based the new PASSPORT8500ci Plus on the industry standard “World’s Best” award-winning PASSPORT8500 series detector platform and includes ESCORT’s test-winning Defender Database™ for red light and speed camera protection.

“Our new PASSPORT 8500ci Plus is a simple, clean, custom installed system that features our class-leading radar and laser protection technology as well as red light, speed camera and speed trap alerts built in. The 8500ci offers great value, unmatched in the industry by all other remote systems,” said John Larson, ESCORT President and CEO. “The detailed information and various categories of alerts reported by the 8500ci’s discreet in-vehicle display, reassures drivers that they are being protected with a superior radar and laser defense system.”

Designed for under-hood mounting behind the grill with the display controller mounted in the car, the PASSPORT 8500ci Plus is easy to install. By separating the major components into remotely installed modules a system is created that delivers superior quality radar/laser performance and does away with visible brackets, cups and cords. The PASSPORT 8500ci Plus custom installed radar detector features test-winning long range performance against all guns and all modes of radar and laser in use today. The new PASSPORT 8500ci Plus includes ESCORT’s patented GPS based TrueLock technology to manually lock out false alerts with the touch of a button – something none of the competitors have.

Built-in location awareness technology provides alerts to red light and speed camera locations and AutoSensitivity automatically adjusts radar performance based on driving speed. ExpertMeter alerts and displays multiple radar threats at the same time while SpecDisplay reports the exact frequency of the source of the threat. Along with other key ESCORT technologies, the PASSPORT 8500ci Plus is fully compatible with ESCORT’s Shifter Pack for the utmost protection against speed-of-light laser encounters.

I find that noticing the speed limit means I do not really need a "detector"
In any case, apart from the cost of the thing, by the time it has noticed the RF emission from the speed meter you will have already been "read".....

It is possible to detect radio emissions at a greater distance than that at which the camera can resolve the letters on the number plate. In fact I used to have the use of a bit of kit which could detect radio emissions at a distance of 10 billion lightyears :D

You may not have been able to see the number plate but I guess you could still tell he was going pretty damn fast! :D

Oh, we got the numbers of lots of them - 3C273, QSO0836, PKS1127, CTA102. 3C273 has been observed to be travelling at 10e8 mph for over 50years without an accident. :D

In the words of the SCP - "Just because you haven't had an accident, doesn't justify travelling at those speeds!"

Besides, all the damage might be at the back where you cannot see it - like our moon!!

i dont think the realms of CSCP have reached that far yet

to the topic depends if the device is an indicator, defelctor, diffuser or jammer

Dont be too sure about it, they have made several impossible claims already

Can you explain what each of these are, and how they differ from the rest?

Several "detectors"
One is the ubiquitous GPS based one, such as the satnav using a database.
Another uses "stealth" technology to absorb the radar (not much use against laser)
And there is the radio/light receiver that actually receives the signal emitted by the radar/laser gun.
The receiver may be some use against the gatso device (X-band) but is of no use when a laser is used.....since (as far as I know) the laser is not "fired" until the vehicle is aimed at.
The jammer is illegal anyway.

1. indicator - your standard GPS sat nav,

2. deflector / splitter / diffuser - scrambles the return signal, resulting in an E01,

3. jammer - jams the signal E07

in 2 and 3 would raise an eyebrow with the operator

Thanks CO. However, I'm sill confused as to the difference between a "deflector" and "diffuser"; are they the same thing?

deflector, diffuser and as i added splitter are terms that have been used, if they are different devices i dont know, the result is the same. BTW they are normally on your top end cars for some reason

Aren't they the same devices used to automatically open garage doors? If so, that would explain why they are mainly found on cars likely to be garaged in garages with electronically opened doors.

However, Davies’s new device is entirely different. Rather than passively alerting the driver to the presence of a speed trap, it actively sends back a laser beam that jams the police equipment. When combined with the traditional camera detectors, it means that drivers can, in theory, have a vehicle that allows them to defeat any kind of police speed check. “We don’t sell it as a ‘laser jammer’,” says Davies. “We emphasise that it is used to open automatic garage doors (which operate on the same wavelength, coincidentally) or activate outside lights when you arrive home. But about 99% of people use it as a way of avoiding laser guns.

Nevertheless, South Wales police, who profess a zero tolerance of laser jammers, have successfully managed to prosecute one man for using a jammer. He was charged with perverting the course of justice, in what is thought to be the only such case so far in the UK.

Jammers portrayed as garage door openers are still very naughty. I made a post in the past about it here. I've since played with actual LTI hardware, my opinion in the matter hasn't changed.

However, the PASSPORT8500ci doesn't seem to be that type of device. It appears to be a more intelligent GPS-based detector and seems quite unrelated to the decade old article you linked/quote from, jomukuk.

There is nothing "new" in the passport thingy.
A gps-based unit that features both laser and "radar" reception.
The "radar" reception may provide some warning, but since the rf emission-based speed devices are being replaced by buried sensor based detectors they are of little use. As I said (and I refuse to accept the "evidence" of the device manufacturer) the laser receiver will only receive when in the laser beam or when it captures a reflection.
Quite frankly, anyone who drives habitually over the speed limit and relies on any of these to try and avoid detection is due to have a licence packed with points.
It looks as if it may have the abilty to report things to a database, but then so have lots of others.
The detectors are legal. the jammers are not.

At least those aren’t mobile, good from the POV of a database :)

True. However, the passport thingy is modular, which is good as 905nm doesn’t pass so well through windshields.
Furthermore, these Lidar detectors have a hope of being useful in that UK speedscope-based lidar guns often don't get a valid hit on the first attempt (in my experience). So there can be (but not always) a useful warning.

I agree, I rely on the Mk1 eyeball :)

Strongly disagree with that, the alert can be effective and has made a save twice in 5 years to my direct knowledge with a windscreen mount. Once the LEO had to re-acquire the target, the other one was reflection from the Cayman in front of the detector.

The detectors are legal. the jammers are not.

Jammers are not illegal if they have another function. Only serious errors with the drivers defence will result in succesful prosecution
