Windermere schoolchildren shame speeding motorists

The children thanked considerate drivers

Children in a Cumbrian town have been getting their message across to people who drive too fast near their school.

A group of year-six pupils from Goodly Dale School in Windermere, joined forces with the neighbourhood policing team for the initiative on Monday.

They used a portable speed indication device to check how fast vehicles were travelling on the A5074.
A "too fast" message was held up to drivers exceeding the 30mph limit, and a "thank you" to those observing it.

Sgt Ken Jewell, from Cumbria Police, said: "I think all of the drivers who exceeded the 30mph speed will have been suitably ashamed of their behaviour and, we hope, will slow down next time they pass the school.
"The local community has told us they want police to tackle speeding as a priority, and this is just one of the creative ways we are trying to encourage people to slow down in Windermere."

I was at school with Sgt.Ken Jewell - and when my children attended, was a governor at Goodly Dale School.
The school is only yards from the police station - but has a long history of accidents due to excess speed, and inattention.

Our previous community officer used to stand on the road side with a radar gun, and WARN offending drivers the first time, and book them the second, not just for speeding, but carrying children in the back with no seatbelts!

After a few weeks of this relaxed form of enforcement, the problem dried up - but 6 years on, has returned!

This new approach has worked really well - and not earned the CSCP or the treasury a penny in fines!

so where did the speeding fines go to if not the treasury, the same has been done by SCP and community police for years, i done a few including posters like illustrated, red / green flags or just stop and have a chat, with any traveling above the relevant speed threshold being issued a NIP on the spot

i dont really have the time lately but i will do a search about similar operations onhere, if memory serves me right many said what a waste of time

Really? I had no idea SCP staff were such charitable people?! Tell me though, if it's not about the money, why are they all being disbanded now that they're not getting said money?

i am assuming all SCP have resources for education purposes to which this would not oubt fall into to coincide with probably the school safety project

which ones are disbanded, since 2007 everything is centrally funded, with each year the funding decreases, which is no doubt structured into the buisness plan, then we had the huge cuts so the councils withdrew a massive chunk of funds, as the SCP staff are police employees, there would be no redundancy payments required off the council.

although i will say the second time i left the SCP it ws on principle, my car was due to be renewed so i asked for a Ferrai, but was told due to cutbacks i had to make do with a Porche, theres no way on earth i will drive foreigh crap
