120 drivers caught breaking 30mph limit on Aberdeen road
Cameras snap scores of lawbreakers in just six hours
Published: 13/10/2011

SLOW DOWN: A new 30mph warning sign on North Esplanade West, Aberdeen.

MORE than 120 drivers were caught breaking the 30mph limit on an Aberdeen road in just six hours.

North East Safety Camera Partnership officials, who monitored the road, said a number of drivers were recorded at speeds of between 40mph and 50mph.

News of the offences on Aberdeen’s North Esplanade West has drawn criticism from road safety campaigners.
I have placed a Google link .... I have also driven the road although it was a few years back. Makes me question the validity of the 30mph limit when so many are going over the posted limit. How about they do a survey ?

Gotta be careful with this.
It could be that the 85th%ile is within the posted speed limit.
120 drivers in 6 hours is an average of one every three minutes. So judging by that link, the offenders could be only 1 every 100. Those could be drivers travelling at 31 or above, as opposed to being above the nominal prosecution threshold (the description in the article isn’t clear). If so, then it follows that the 99th percentile is within the limit.

I agree that is poses more questions than it answers. We have no idea how many vehicles travelled that road during the time they observed traffic. If we don't know the volume then we cannot tell where the 85th%ile is of course.

Sadly the authorities probably don't know where that is either.

Our local rag has residents complaining about a 30MPH limit where 45% of drivers are exceeding 30MPH and a view on google makes it obvious why.

Obviously a road dropped to 30MPH when a survey would have shown the mean speeds to be well in excess of 30MPH.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.
