I am well aware of that Botach. I am also acutely aware that when I am driving motor car I have a much greater duty of care than when I am walking. For the simple reason that I can do much more damage with 1.43tonnes of metal travelling at 27.4mph than I can do with .08tonnes of body travelling at 2.07mph.

Therefore as a pedestrian it is in my own interest to take extra care, after all the best person to look after my safety, in watever I am doing, is me, not rely on others.

You still have to rely on others to be safe around you.

For instance, badly driven cars mount pavements every day and kill or injure people on them, not much you can do as a ped to avoid that, but the car driver can do an awful lot for that not to happen in the first place.

I would consider this relativly rare occurence and when it does happen, apart from the driver being taken ill, , how many times it has been caused by trying to avoid a thoughtless action of a pedestrian or cyclist, albeit that an alert and experienced driver would have probably anticipated the situation.

I suspect that this type of accident is actually rather rare and NOT representative of the typical pedestrian/car interaction. I would not be at all surprised if cyclist/pedestrian collisions on pavements (Some of which DO result in fatalities) are rather more common!

Does it matter how often it happens (I think it happens much more often than you'd think, pretty much every barrier on the A40 near Hanger Lane has some sort of crash damage on it).

It happens, and dispells the mantra from many Safe Speed members that you have 100% control over outcomes; other people out there are responsible for your safety too and if they shirk that responsibility (mobile phone use, inappropriate speeds, inattention) there is little or nothing you can do about it in certain situations.

Our issue is how much responsibility all parties should be taking, not just those piloting vehicles. It's very well saying we should be mindful of others no matter how stupid they may be, but I read very little addressing the root cause: the potential for stupidity and mitigation thereof. Ironically, a slight tweak to Weepej's other post proves the point:

Bit late to this party but :
:welcome: City-Rider

An interesting item. Perspective from another mode of transport is often extremely helpful to fully appreciate their issues and problems when travelling.
We always need to be responsible for our actions and leave space around us for our mistakes and for those around us. It is this 'safety' space that can provide an all important cushion, when others make a mistake that can help us (being very aware at the time) from ending up in an accident. It is not that we are all 100% perfect, but that we have systems of behaviour that aid our safety and for those around us.
