Motorway services – show them no merci
19 December 2011

Drivers continue to part with more cash for everyday items at motorway service areas, shelling out up to 40 per cent more for everyday items than they would on the high street.

A large Snickers bar costs 90 pence from a motorway service area compared to 68 pence from a high street branch – 32 per cent more – while a regular coffee costs 16 per cent more on the motorway. A packet of McCoys crisps was almost 45 per cent more expensive than a shop on the high street, and a packet of Walkers crisps was marked up by 36 per cent.

With petrol prices averaging about ten pence per litre more than at off-motorway forecourts the IAM is calling for a complete review of motorway prices, together with filling stations being forced to advertise their and their competitors’ fuel prices, as is the case in France.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “We must end this motorway madness. Everything from sweets to petrol have an outrageous mark up.

“Our advice for tired motorists is always to take your rest break and have a coffee to help you freshen up. The danger is that rip-off prices will discourage people from getting the rest they need. Parking fines for drivers who sleep for longer than two hours put people off taking rest breaks.”

I usually take my own food and drink and often a flask of hot water and milk ... always shave coffee making facilities on long journeys so I can if needs be make up a hot meal too...
But if I can I'll buy a drink once in a while - expresso's are cheapest and keep you awake the best especially with lots of sugar ! :)

I always buy coffee in the services, as my waistline will testify, so I know they're expensive but broadly in line with star bucks et al but I was starving this morning so bought a BLT in reading services........£3.89!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is that the air and water were out of order...the reason I stopped in the first place and surely one of the fundamentals of a service station. Having the basics like FREE air and water should be a statutory duty incumbent on the service station operators. It doesn't take many BLTs to subsidise a few free taps and hoses!

An it's being going on for a long ,long time .
My first motorway trip was way back in the late 60's ,from the narrow single track roads of the west coast down the A74 to the A1(M) AND m1 to London . My sister was also working in London for another branch of the civil service and we regularly (every few months) went back up north for a few days , spelling the driving .First thing we noticed was to avoid the motorway services for fuel - far better to fill up off the motorway at a JET station . Again food - we'd look for truck stops -lot cheaper ,more of it and often of better standard .
After a few years , there was a lot of noise over motorway services prices and quality ,so it improved . Nowadays I find both are back at same high & low .But if you go off motorway on junctions ,you'll find snack bars ( rough rule of thumb is to look for most trucks per van) .

Nearly £7 for a gallon of read-mixed screenwash on the M74 this morning! Still, if you don't want to pay the prices, you don't have to - they must get enough custom to make it worth their while!

They have to pay very heavy rent/rates to the government. They also have to provide some services 24/7, and are restricted in the scope of commercial activities they can undertake, so I don't think they're making huge super-profits.

It's not unreasonable as such for business to charge a premium for convenience - after all, plenty of others do. And show me the town within a few miles of a motorway junction where you can readily find a petrol station, free car park, public toilets in tolerable condition and coffee shop at 7.30 am or 9 pm.

£4.99 meal 'deal' on the A1 in Doncaster. A fiver! For a sarnie (not very nice, I might add), bag of crisps and a drink. Not even a motorway, either.

You pay for convenience, nothing is stopping you taking a short detour to find something cheaper and better quality.

I don't entirely agree with paying for parking over the time limit but some services can get very busy and again you can always turn off the motorway and find a quiet side road if you want a longer nap.

You can turn off the motorway but time can become an issue and turning off tends to go against our 'need to progress' and feels like a detour or delay. There is also the security issue - and to me as a lady that is of a concern. I have done it but I try to pick near to a built up area if I have to.

The service station fee after 2 hrs as far as has been previously discussed on here is bunkum they cannot charge for it - it is a deterrent to prevent you from staying longer but even if you receive a letter - ignore it as it is unenforceable.

Some have stores now available which is a bit better but sometimes getting a hot meal when travelling a long way is nice that it is all ready and waiting.
When they are open, there is a farm shop at one in the Cumbrian Service stops, and we used to buy sausages there and have a good hearty breakfast /lunch. With that lovely smell wafting over the car park, it seemed to set everyone else off too !

Personally I think a small shopping area and excellent garage & toilet facilities ought to be standard practice throughout all trunk routes. To not have water and air facilities is a gross failure and needs a serious complaint.
I do have my own water and air pump always on hand, as it used to be that the supplied facilities were never very accurate! I am rather independent though! I always have a back up camping stove and cooking facilities in case I become stranded anywhere !

And if you get off at ( I think Penrith, certainly north of the farm shop) and go a short distance into town you've got a choice of Morrisons( if memory serves) or a chippy .And if you need fuel - it's cheaper there too .

The services off the M6 nr the A66 turn off heading to (West) Keswick are good and good priced fuel, open 24/7 ... and if you go East to Penrith there are a few stores that I recall but unlikely over night though (the best time to travel unless ).
I also wish that there were inbetween stopping places for a minimum of sleeping and toilet facilities especially when service stations are more than 20 odd miles apart.

If you head off the M6 about half a mile into Stoke @J16 ,there used to be a couple of snack wagons ,and from the amount of trucks ,well worth it .
Again J15 ,Stoke side -there used to be one or two .
Likewise find a junction with an industrial estate close by and usually there's a snack bar ( I used to call them greasy spoon places) -licenced by county councils ,so they've got to meet decent stanards .
For fuel -I use to look/Google for the major supermarkets with fuel . On a trip from home to Fort William ,I used to pull in at ( think it was ) J10 of the M8 ( Easterhouse from memory) ,where Morrisons had cheap fuel .Alternatively Sainsbury on the A82 north of Anniesland cross was also cheap .

There is a v good truck stop in Inverness just off the A82 but it is only open daytime and hard to find if you don't know where it is ! However v good food :) Near to Esso fuel station which is one of the cheapest in the Highland area, £130.9/L for unleaded, but some places are still charging £138.9p/L rotten souls!

When we (me & mrs )were regular travellers northward(da was in New craigs for almost a year),we found Morrisons a safe bet for food ,both quality and price . Our favourite haunt in Inverness was Morrisons ,both for fuel an food .

I have also followed an M6 sign for a truck stop only services and they were very good - just a small car park for cars but open 24/7 excellent tea and food and could park in sight of the canteen so good for security. That was a pleasing experience and cheap and decent.

Going into Scotland, I usually stop at (I think) Happendon Services - I think the franchise there is called Cairn Lodge. Good value in the cafeteria and the shop as far as services go.

My Brother in Law - who travels up from Lancashire always has breakfast at Tebay Services, but it is too close to home for us!

Southbound, I just go by how long we have travelled, but usually it is Sandbach, Stoke or Hilton Park - or if we are making good time, Chievely of the A34/M4 - just for convenience really. With the exception of Happendon, they are all costly - but then so are the rents, rates and franchise fees they have to pay to be on the sites!

Northwards - Happendon is nice ,as is Abbinton . Fuel wise -I always waited to J10(?) Easterhouse to fill up at Morrisons .
Southward - going off the M6 a mile or two at the A500 Junction toward Stoke/Newcastle( under Lyme) ( as in not Crewe) -there's a couple of laybyes opposite each other with a good few trucks stopped ( usually a sign of quality) ,and an easy turn round point to get back on the motorway .
Can't mention Abbington ,without a warning - the bridge over the motorway used to get a regular visit from a cash collection van - so moderation in that area might be advised
Further south - A34 ,heading to Stoke - there used to be a few .
Don't know of any further south on M6 in Warks - as WCC discourage mobile vans ,whilst Stafford CC look on it as a source of money -eg licences and work for the health lot .
However ,on the M40 ,first junction south of Longbridge ( J14 from Autoroute) , there used to be a few vans ( and a lot of trucks) on the Warwick road .
But going in any direction - we used to carry food and flascs . Then we got round to carrying a 5 litre bottle of water ,a stove and flascs ( with a little kettle, and a mini frying pan) ,as our northern trips became more frequent .

No although Lumm might sound familiar ... I am terrible with names but good with visuals ! It is off the roundabout and then you head about 1-3 miles down he road - clearly signposted. There is a moderate sized simple building single storey and couple of blue doors with upper half glass and a v point over the entrance to the doors. It is a little old compared to modern design but bight and clean and tidy inside. Simple layout with serving area to the right, when you enter, and seats ahead and left mostly with the loos (through swing doors) are dead ahead, the other side of the seating, windows left and also at the front entrance area. The car park is a gravel area directly opposite the entrance and the very large (looked like to me, but it was darkish -3am or so) truck park, is to the left of the cafe entrance. There is a very small road in front of the cafe which lead to other houses it looked like but it may just have been one house or bungalow.
Sorry just cannot think what it is called ! Pretty certain off M6 - although the slim-est chance it was M74 (which is Scotland's part of the M6 - why it can't just be the M6 I dunno!)

As for fuel, Southwaite services between Penrith and Carlisle has just dropped it's fuel prices and is cheaper than the local petrol stations!!
