Going into Scotland, I usually stop at (I think) Happendon Services - I think the franchise there is called Cairn Lodge. Good value in the cafeteria and the shop as far as services go.
My Brother in Law - who travels up from Lancashire always has breakfast at Tebay Services, but it is too close to home for us!
Southbound, I just go by how long we have travelled, but usually it is Sandbach, Stoke or Hilton Park - or if we are making good time, Chievely of the A34/M4 - just for convenience really. With the exception of Happendon, they are all costly - but then so are the rents, rates and franchise fees they have to pay to be on the sites!
Northwards - Happendon is nice ,as is Abbinton . Fuel wise -I always waited to J10(?) Easterhouse to fill up at Morrisons .
Southward - going off the M6 a mile or two at the A500 Junction toward Stoke/Newcastle( under Lyme) ( as in not Crewe) -there's a couple of laybyes opposite each other with a good few trucks stopped ( usually a sign of quality) ,and an easy turn round point to get back on the motorway .
Can't mention Abbington ,without a warning - the bridge over the motorway used to get a regular visit from a cash collection van - so moderation in that area might be advised
Further south - A34 ,heading to Stoke - there used to be a few .
Don't know of any further south on M6 in Warks - as WCC discourage mobile vans ,whilst Stafford CC look on it as a source of money -eg licences and work for the health lot .
However ,on the M40 ,first junction south of Longbridge ( J14 from Autoroute) , there used to be a few vans ( and a lot of trucks) on the Warwick road .
But going in any direction - we used to carry food and flascs . Then we got round to carrying a 5 litre bottle of water ,a stove and flascs ( with a little kettle, and a mini frying pan) ,as our northern trips became more frequent .
