Would you support a move to introduce licences, licence plates and road insurance for cyclists? A new petition to do just that has just been launched.
The petition is also calling for all schools to do mandatory cycling safety courses - as part of their PE.
What do you think - should we make everyone do a test - before they can ride a bike on the roads?

Well up for cycling courses at schools, the more cyclists the better, love to see government spending our tax on getting more people into cycling.

Cycling is of course safe, getting hit by motor vehicle isn't.

Registration of cyclists? Never going to happen.

, as said by the person sitting under the bridge. Perhaps it's time for motorists to MAKE it happen. great idea. The GREAT (& GOOD) CYCLISTS LOBBY shouts that cyclists HAVE nothing to hide. Lets AEE THEM put their money where there ideas lie. Perhaps ,THOSE WHO HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR , MIGHT LIKE TO COME FORWARD AND EMBRACE THIS GREAT IDEA. A test, to ride a bike on the ROAD- NOVEL, BUT how many lives would it save /year.

...and right next to this thread too!

As ever, your sense of timing is impeccable!

It's probably best to keep telling yourself that. However, as the popularity of cycling increases, you can also see the groundswell of public opinion growing - particularly against the more loutish members of the cycling fraternity. Politicians only care about votes. Unless the cycling community starts to curb some of it's more "millitant" members' activities, it's only a matter of time before public opinion turns on them to the extent that it will become appealing to politicians to pick up a few votes by clamping down on them. In the meantime, we continue to give them more rope...

OR Weepy could have said..."Exceeding a speed limit is safe, hitting something or someone whilst doing so, isn't!

The cycling community? What's that?!

Do you think you need to apologise as a driver for the behaviour of bad drivers and the driving community needs to curb some of it more militant members activities?

perhaps someone might point the last poster in the direction of viewtopic.php?f=47&t=17486

particularly rules 6 & 7 .

i leave rule 6 to admin, but I'm concerned about 7 ,in that those interested in ridiculing the good work of the organisers of this forum ,might have their good work ridiculed by comments such as last post ,and others this poster has made.

CJG- any link to the petition, as I for one would willingly add my name to it .

"Cyclists as a group". "A collective of those who use pedal cycles "...Is it really that hard a concept to grasp?!

When I see a motorist behaving in a way that I feel is unacceptable, I feel that (quite apart from any safety risk they might be posing) they also increase the risk of yet more legislation that will end up at best penalising, and at worst, curbing the freedoms that other motorists enjoy. (I'm not sure that's the same as apologising). Still, I'm sure plenty of cyclists must feel the same way when they see other cyclists behaving in a similar fashion?

Do I think the driving community needs to curb some of it more militant members activities? NO. That's what the police are for, and the reams of regulations aimed specifically at motorists. It wasn't always thus, of course, the behaviour of some has caused much of the legislation to be enacted. Of course, one could NEVER envisage a similar sort of thing happening with cyclists, could one?!

The last statement was (presumably)
Quote:

made with tongue in cheek, but the cycling community would like to like to see a different sort of cheek- one where cyclists park when they want.
