I am a non-smoker so its not a problem to me. I do think it is getting daft. What will the think of next?

I wonder where they get their "facts" from...made up on the spot probably.

Quote:
German lawmakers want to ban smoking for drivers
BERLIN (Reuters) - Several German lawmakers want to ban smoking while driving, saying it's hazardous.

"The dangers of causing an accident rise drastically when you smoke and drive," said Peter Danckert of the ruling Social Democrats. "I want a complete ban on smoking for drivers."

Danckert and Katherina Reiche of the opposition Christian Democrats told Germany's best-selling newspaper, Bild, they will push for legislation to outlaw smoking for drivers.

Reiche noted parliament had passed a law outlawing the use of cell phones for drivers.

"Cigarettes are just as much of a distraction as cell phones," she said. "We need a new law banning it with fines."

I would like to see their research.

I'm not certain that roads full of people suffering nicotine-starvation induced rage and agression would be a good thing for safety.

No doubt smoking whilst driving causes a third of all fatalities.

...and mobile phones another third.
...and speeding another third of course, lest we forget.
...and falling asleep another third.

...and so on.

Good point....it would be like a scene from Dawn of the Dead at the traffic lights.

How about KIDS

Biggest distraction ever invented.

I would suport a ban in kids in the car. It would cut my fuel bill in half....

Comparing smoking while driving, to using a mobile 'phone while driving seems to be inaccurate. I would have thought that smoking would become an automatic, almost unconscious exercise. Whereas holding a conversation would require more attention, which would probably be better focussed on the act of driving itself.

Although, having said that, I would've thought that smoking would be a dsitraction of sorts. Just not as bad as a mobile 'phone.

If smoking is banned in cars it's a law that will prove as enforceable as the mobile phone ban.
So it will be ignored.

Did a lad for Sec 2 for that very thing. He continued driving while scratting around in his nether regions in blind panic. His eyes were scouring the seat and the footwell to such an extent that he did not realise he was heading left towards a car which was waiting in at a T junction.
He collided with the front wing of the car at nearly 50mph amazingly causing virtually no injury, although both cars were totalled.

Having smoked for 16 years and now stopped for 16 years, I know they can be an added hazard when driving. Conversely, it would not be a good idea to have someone rushing to get home for a ciggy, because they are not allowed to have one in the car.

My attitude to smoking now is, I'm happy enough for people to smoke, as long as it's not in my company. If they prop up my pension by contributing the same and dying young, that is their lookout  .

As with everything else, it's OK to light up when safe to do so - if not, wait until it is.

Cheers

I shall be off to the patent office tomorrow with my handsfree kit for cigarettes (which is basically a bendy plastic tube with a hard end for insertng the cigarette and a suction cup for attaching to the outside of your window or above your ashtray.

This cheap crappy product will be as effective in cutting accidents as the cheap crappy handsfree kits everyone bought that require you to hold your ear next to a cheap speaker attached to your cigarette lighter socket in order to understand what the caller is saying.

Next years BMWs and Lexus models will be released with an optional in-dash bong

Trouble is Ian, it's usually the wrong ones that die - the bad 'uns usually cling to life for years, needing expesive treatment on the NHS, using up your pension fund, and the Scamarati revenue!! :?

I have a zero tolerance policy. Any trouble, and I find a safe place to pull over and order them out, and leave them on the side of the road! :o

It's never happened yet, but as far as they know, the possibility exists!!!

Non smoker myself and am very much like Ian in attitude towards.

Smoking in a car?

Ciggy can be dangerous if fag end drops in your lap and other obvious danger is lighting up whilst driving.

Have we had accidents down to fags?

Hand on heart - cannot remember any I have actually dealt with or investigated. Am aware that some have been recorded as a secondary but not prime cause in our patch.

Should it be banned?

No - ciggy is a different shape to mobile phone and smoking is second nature to most smokers. Aggression will bite in long journeys and it does not bode well for safety. Am sure either me or Mad Doc will report on radarfalle view of this when we get a moment spare.

never! i only had problems for the first few months of driving. now i dont even think about it or look down from the road. i know where all my little cubby holes are and how to open them without looking.
i have given someone a fag and lit a lighter in front of my mouth with nothing there. it must be my Scottish nature. if i open a packet, it is to take one out. if i give it away, tough!

No no no no

I have no particular view on the perils of smoking in a car but...its just another bloody law that isn't needed. Just like the mobile phone law.

There are already offences of dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention. Smoking, using a mobile or speeding for that matter can all be presented as evidence of those offences.

The problem is two fold:

1 legislators feel the need to make new laws to justify their existence.

2 specific bans and speed limits make for easier and more 'efficient' prosectutions. were you smoking yes or no? easy - no brainer - £60 please.

was the fact that you were smoking at that particular time in that situation constitute driving without due care and attention? mmmmm not sure.

Beware of the laws. Their primary benefit is in the administration of the justice system not to improving safety.
