The have just put a 40 limit on the new roadworks at junction 21 (Leicester) junction of the M1. I see there are SPECS camera mount posts going in so it looks like they will be there for the duration... :x

No cameras mounted yet but they are just putting the plumbing in.

With 40 limits now standard at road works it looks like road works are the new little earner for the SCPs

How do they justify these 40 limits? I don't have a problem with enforcement of an appropriate limit, so my complaint isn't against the SPECS cameras, but I don't see how such a low speed limit can be justified? How is a motorway with roadworks any different from a normal NSL dual carriageway? There are roads I drive along to and from work every day that are much more dangerous, have absolutely continuous traffic levels all day long, yet they're 50 or NSL. I can see the point if there is a contraflow, but I've driven along 40mph motorway roadworks where the central reservation continued to separate the two flows of traffic. Okay, so there might be a slight narrowing of lanes sometimes, but they're typically still wide enough that they would be considered normal on a non-motorway NSL dual carriageway.

The one problem I do have with SPECS is that the enforcement isn't apparent to many motorists. If the limit is 40, then I'll drive at 40 whether I like that limit or not, but it's positively dangerous to then have loads of lorries going past me at 50mph. The fact that they'll be receiving a ticket in the post for doing so does nothing to eliminate the danger at the time.

Big accident on the M21 south exit slip near the SPECS cameras. It was grid lock there yesterday......maybe a case of panic braking

So much for road safety.

I was following a car yesterday that had a sign in the back window saying "this car sticks to the speed limit". Driver and passenger 50 somethings wearing his and hers flowerpot hats. He was doing 35 in a 30 limit. Did not slow down for a temp 20 limit on a resurfaced section of road. Also went through my estate where there are parked cars on both sides of the narrow roads. He was weaving through the parked cars at 30! even though there were kids playing on the pavement.

I would have loved the opportunitiy to have a word...

an unfortunate side affect of 'speed kills' messages.

"I'm a safer, better more responsible driver than you because I stick to the speed limit."

Unfortunately, those who tend to have to make a public statement about it are the same people who are happy to deliberately block overtakes will rarely check there blind spots and often tailgate the car in front.

If I was driving regularly through an area like that where I knew the chances are one day my avg. may be 42. I think I'd be tempted to apply a couple of large dollops of mud to my front and rear plate.
