Can't argue with that one Twister, but what the sign DOES do is stop the muppet from driving 2ft off the tailboard of the trailer

Oh yeah, I don't doubt that they're useful reminders to muppets like that. I just think that muppets who consider tailgating a HGV to be a sensible

Hell, even sensible drivers who'd never consider running close enough to the back end of a trailer to read off the serial number from the makers plate, might be fooled into thinking that they'll be safe so long as they can see the mirrors - as you said yourself, it wasn't until you had some experience of being in the HGV cab that you realised just how poor rearward visibility is during certain maneouvres.

Must agree with you , Twister, pity they don't think it applies to vehicles that don't have a sign - most of the larger vans fall into that category - Transit / MERC / etc - I drive one of these at work and rear ward visibility is better on the HGV than on these - yet i still get bikes / cars dissapearing into the bit at the back, and with a small fraction of its rated weight these vans can stop very quick

Ok, lets be realistic here. Car drivers are by and large complete idiots driving around in their own little "safe zone" where they think nothing is going to hurt them. They are brainwashed into thinking that if they aren't speeding then they are driving safely. The great majority of them have no idea of cause and effect-or that a car is potentially a lethal weapon, be it to themselves or others. But then you guys all realise this, or you wouldn't be on these forums.

What we need is a way of educating these morons into THINKING and OBSERVING whilst driving.Make them understand that one wrong move could well be their last-or the last for someone else. make them understand that "but I didn't mean to" or "I didn't think" is not an excuse for being a danger to others.

Make them ride a bike first? Hell yeah-for 6 months.Familiarity with the bike is the key. A day won't make any difference unless they happen to have everyone pull out on them, fall off on wet manholes/overbanding, get cut up by the moron who thinks they only need 6" room when they are overtaken etc etc.

Make them drive an artic? Yeah, around a car park. Make them try and reverse it into a tight space with badly parked cars. Make them try and go round a small/medium roundabout in one lane or take tight left turn. Make them try and do an emergency stop and a hillstart.-and make them do the whole lot while the truck is loaded. It'd only take 10 minutes to do that lot.

Essentially, we need to find a way of making these fools think about their actions and be aware that their actions directly impact upon others. ALL drivers will say they understand this-but it's a parent/child thing. Unless they actually experience it then the lesson isn't truly taken on board.Vehicles dont' need " if you can't see my mirrors" signs- Drivers need educating.
