On Monday my 18yr old son passed his driving test - woohoo or boohoo depending upon how you look at it.
Anyway, his examiner took his licence, both parts, and told him he'd send it to DVLA and he'll get his full licence within 3 weeks. He has a pass certificate that says this may happen.
WTF When did this start? Why do they do this, altruism? I always thought it was up to the individual to send the documentation to DVLA themselves.
Anyone else heard of this or know why they do it?

Don't know when it came in Riggers - but this was the case when our eldest passed his test in October last..

Know what you mean - mixed feelings. You do worry - 20 mintes late and you start pacing and looking at the clock! This is my steady one ! The twins?

I could be misremembering it but I'm sure the examiner sent my licence away to Swansea when I passed, which I think was in 1990. I suppose it makes sense for the licence to go in the same envelope as the examiner's paperwork.

They started this a couple of years ago. I suspect there used to be a reason why the candidate needed to send it off, but now I don't think there is any reason why the examiner can't do it. Apparently some people never send it off (either due to terminal forgetfulness or stupidity) and you only get two years otherwise you need to sit the test again.

I also suspect that there might have been some kind of scam where somebody could sit the test using their provisional licence but send another person's back to be converted. I can't think of an angle on this, but I suspect there is some scam going on that could be squashed like this.

I know cheques can be altered - both handwritten and printed - laser is a big no-no for cheques because the ink can be simply scraped off.

But wouldn't the certificate be cross checked with the test centre records?

My examiner didn't do it for me in Feb 04, I had to do it myself (about 2 months later, ). But bear in mind that this was in Cumbria, we're about 20 years behind the times anyway..

If you pass…
Automatic driving licence issue
If you pass and have a photocard driving licence issued after 1 March, 2004 the examiner will ask you if you want your full driving licence issued to you automatically.

If you want to use this service, the examiner will take your old licence off you, scan the details and send them electronically to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You will then be given a pass certificate to prove you passed your test. DVLA will then send you your new full licence by post within three weeks of you passing your practical test.
