It was only a matter of time.

50mph is far too low on this stretch. This really is a cash cow (2 miles from my front door)

FOI request me thinks.

SAFETY CAMERAS TO ENFORCE A473 COYCHURCH BYPASS
Mobile safety cameras are to enforce the 50mph speed limit on the A473 Coychurch Bypass from 8 August following complaints from local residents about speeds driven by motorists.

Mid & South Wales Safety Camera Partnership has conducted speed surveys on the stretch of road in Bridgend in response to concerns expressed by residents, the police and the council. During one of the surveys a top speed of 80mph was recorded, with 40 people driving at more than 60mph.

Bridgend County Borough Council reduced the speed limit from 70mph to 50mph last year after a spate of accidents. Between July 1999 and June 2004, one person was killed and 98 were injured. There has been one fatal accident since this speed limit reduction.

Phil Davies, manager of Mid & South Wales Safety Camera Partnership, said: “Speed limits are there for everyone’s safety. Some of the speeds we have seen on the Coychurch Bypass are totally unacceptable and are putting innocent road users at risk. People have already lost their lives on this stretch of road and we hope that our mobile camera enforcement will encourage motorists to stick to the limit and help prevent any more deaths and serious injuries.”

Hmm, so in the five years between 1999 and 2004 there was one fatality. But now they've lowered the speed limit to 50 mph, there's only been one fatality in the last year. That's despite the vast majority driving below the previous 70 mph limit. So obviously, speed is a big factor then.

Speed is a great factor when putting up cameras, actually. Reduce the limit and get more money from the blokes hidden in the bushes taking the pictures.

Exactly.

I've driven it for about a year now and can honestly say that 70mph is perfectly adequate.

anyone else know the road?

I guess you could use their statistics to imply that this has upped the risk on this stretch of road 5 fold

Its amazing the different spin you can put on a point by selectively presenting the same statistics with careful wording.

Yes - use it most weekends and agree most of the time 70 is perfectly safe, and when it's not people self regulate. I've been wondering how long "justification" for scamming it would take.

Cheers

Paul

CE Where does the info come from? I know quite a few people who may be affected by this.

Cheers

Paul

Which is evidence that the speed limit is too low for the conditions.
