A 50cc moped can quite easily be tuned to give 55mph without too much of a struggle.

When I was a youngster, we regularly tuned our FS1E's, AP50's, etc and had 65-70mph out of them (although mine did go bang at 71mph after the timing slipped).

Now i look at my licence (and handle gently as it is getting very old, like ancient scrolls) and see provisional cat A .
DVLA say cat A is moped -

Does that mean i could get moped and set out on road with just L plates ( got my licence in the 60's)

Aint that mad, but if i wanted to could i legally??

Got cat g/h (road roller/tracked vehicle )- but would i want to drive them on l plate??

I don't think you even need L-plates for a moped - you can drive one legally on a car licence if issued before a certain date.

Peter - that bothers me immensly - last bike i handled had pedals and "too many gears".

I'm not suicidal , so why should i be able to buy one and go out and get mangled, "legally"

In a car , as an old fogie , i reckon my reactions are better than average.
On a moped - i'd be a body ready to be flattened - controls - foreign, reactions fast , but would they be of any use??

Well... so long as you can balance, you'll probably be doing better than half the people on mopeds (usually 16 year olds, or those unable to pass their driving test without several attempts), who have no idea how to drive safely on the road - but they're quite capable of pulling a wheelie.

Naturally, I'm assuming you have good hazard awareness and understand the pecularities for two wheeled things (road surfaces, filtering etc)

But bear in mind what I just said could be a load of crap as I've never driven the things myself, but I am taking a moped/motorbike theory test on Friday, cbt on Sunday. There's also nothing to stop you from taking a cbt even if you are allowed to ride them, so it could be worth it?

Depending on the issue date of the license in your hands, you'll have to double check the groups.

My license (a green one) states that I can drive vehicles in groups A, D, & E.

For me, Group A is any vehicle up to (& including) 7½ tonnes, Group D is any motorcycle, and Group E is a moped.

Would hope so , Gizmo - it would make sense - but how often do DVLA and masters do that.
