So am I correct to think that we are taxed so heavily for fuel becuase of pollution and global warming and tax on congestion is being considered because of the same reasons. And is it not pollution that the anti car types use as a stick to beat us with. Right, so what if we all drove hybrids or fuel cell cars? How would they tax them? How would they justify taxing a car that just drips water? Would the green lobby shut up or would it still be better in there eyes to use the bus?

Drip water - Adam - no problem we'll send in the water board - after all leaks from private property are banned - that'll be £100 for shutting off your supply, and a notice not to switch it on untill all leaks are cured.

Seriously - the green lot are like that gang from some animal film - cars bad, bus good , no matter how the car is powered
It's a silly idea, but i'd like to see their reaction to a car powered by pedal power.

Why do you think road tolls are on the way.

The Government know that low emission cars will be here in the next 10 years. Do you think it is a coincidence that this is the same timing for the roll out of road tolls.

The motorist was a tax cash-cow for the government before the term "global warming" was invented. They are not going to give up on it now.

They would just change the argument to how damaging water vapour is to the climate system-water vapour it is a huge greenhouse gas but at present is not eco-mentally viable as a means to make us all feel guilty. No matter how good/clean a system they will find fault with it.....if it doesn't suit their wacky agenda, that being, their hatred of private transport.

Regards

Andrew

Just to be serious for a minute, (sorry). But I've never understood why power stations can't use the excess heat from condensing steam after passing through the turbines.

This could be used to feed into peoples homes to: heat water, heat the house, dry clothes etc through small heat exchangers. This way the people would have a cheaper heat source and would need less power from gas and electricity to run their homes.

The power station would benefit from an income from the sale and overall be more efficient whilst still dumping the excess heat that they now pour through large cooling towers and releases large amounts of water vapour to atmosphere!

This would significantly reduce oil, gas and coal imports and benefit the economy no-end. Better than just persecuting the motorist to death !

Sorry!....................

The only problem with your excellent idea, Draco, is that the rogues in Westminster would have to ponder on how to maximise the cash from such recycling of unwanted / unuseable heat.

Better to waste it rather than complicate their systems, eh?

It's all over the place actually. Try googling "combined heat and power" (CHP).

Know what you mean Paul, we (at work)actually run one of these installations to provide our electricity but the "maintenance" is done under contract from elsewhere because it's not our main concern, although I think it should be.

Many small units like ours over the nation do make a difference, but just imagine if it were applied to every power station with excess heat being sold also! Surely it's a crime in these "ECO" consious days to waste so much energy to atmosphere.

It just annoys me that the people who could make the BIGGEST impact in this field (i.e. the power stations) are the same ones who are telling us to be more "efficient". ......

Mmm hang on, not quite true that though Paul is it?, the Generator co's are now a private companies and the government cannot therefore direct them as when it was the CEGB. ........Pitty! profit now must come before all, including forward planning. but you catch my drift.

How DO we get what is now a private company to act in the future interests of the nation?
