Given the "Sunday Drive" thread in this forum, I thought you might like to hear about the resolution proposed for the NT AGM.

The resolution is to the effect that the NT should actively discourage visiting its properties by car on environmental grounds.

They say in their notes that, despite the "efforts" they have made already, the proportion of motorists has risen to 94%. They propose to reduce (or charge a lot for) parking.

You have to ask which planet these people are on? There is no serious alternative to using the car - especially on Sundays. They display a Canute like faith in being able to turn back the tide but at least they will get more points from the Government towards their Knighthoods .

If they are so concerned about the environment then they should shut their premises altogether - that will stop the sensless waste of energy in getting to them!

I'm a member of the National Trust so will have to watch out for this when I get my AGM pack.

I assume, though, that this resolution has been proposed by a bunch of lentilistas rather than by the NT Council.

How on earth do they think they could have gained any kind of mass membership without people visiting their properties by car?

Edit:

You can read the resolution at:

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w- ... papers.pdf

I am correct in my supposition above that it is not an "offical" resolution.

Their loss not mine. I work on the simple formulae.

If you want me to visit you provide parking. If not I don't go.

There is always somewhere else that will.

Tourism is a buyers market.

the percentage of journeys made by car to National Trust properties doesn’t seem to have reduced in the past 10 years despite many properties being sited on or near to public transport networks and the introduction of cycling facilities at some properties.

Now this should be telling then something.....but they are obviously to stupid to know what!

Yep. That's my policy too. And lots of other folk.

Remember the Millenium Dome? No parking available at the start... going seriously bust... new management... parking provided... better reults.

We have achieved the 60% target suggested in the
1995 AGM resolution at only two properties – Prior Park and Greenway (both ofwhich have restricted vehicle access).

First rule of target setting......DON'T SET STUPID TARGETS.

It may look good at the AGM but why agree to something that you know is bound to fail. You WILL look a prat.

I'm sure the Council of the National Trust realise very well that if they started charging for parking, their visitor numbers, and particularly their membership recruitment (which is critical for their income) would show a steep decline.

However, the world being what it is, they have to couch their concerns in politically correct terms.

Quote:
On the other hand, we are aware that if we make it too difficult, or too expensive, for visitors to come to our properties, fewer people will be able to enjoy them and we will have less income with which to carry out our conservation work.

Yes, it is very easy to increase the proportion of people travelling by means other than car by simply making it more difficult to travel by car, without any increase whatsoever in non-car numbers.

I'm a NT member too, just renewed this month.

Been thinking back to the places we've visited in the past 12 months, a good 50% are way off the beaten track accessible only by car. Actually, we had to abort a visit to a NT place in Wolverhampton last month, Wytick Manor it's called. Reason...nowhere to parc the old charabanc.

Wightwick Manor - a very interesting house, built for the Mander family of Manders Paints fame in the style of a genuine half-timbered Tudor mansion. I parked in a residential estate just up the hill

I was going to comment that most of the NT properties I can think of don't have any public transport access to speak of.

"Actively discouraging" cars is pretty different to "actively encouraging" other methods, so I presume they mean they will be cutting parking spaces, or charge a huge premium for parking (most likely). Many people I know are quite fickle about parking fees, they will either say "blow this" and go somewhere else or pay up but not visit another NY property for a long time, because all they would remember is having to pay £X before they got through the door.

Yeah, Wightwick Manor, not my duff 'top of the head' spelling.

And as for parking in the resedntial area....tut tut tut, a work colleague lives up there; his wife would have had ur guts fer garters if she'd got wind of your brazen parking habits

Have you been to Moseley Old Hall, one of Charles II hiding places after he fled the Battle of Worcester or Boscobel House where he hid up the tree?

Errmmm......

The free carparking is about the only reason I can see to be a member of the National Trust. :?

The words "feet" and "shoot" spring to mind.

It occurred to me that I had left a substantial legacy to the National Trust in my will.

That gives me a useful lever when writing to them

A polite letter has been composed and will be sent off in the next few days.

Ist very silly. Most of these properties are off beaten track und they will lose membership und sales in those shops und tea rooms as well.

People are just so stupid....nicht? Und in any case -they use buses to and from Speke to McCartney/Lennon houses.... but you need car to get to Speke if you are not local. You would never get there in opening hours on public transport.... even if within 15 mile radius of the very few sites which are on bus route.... und even if they are on a bus route .. ist longest walk to entrances...
