Tragically a man and a women travelling in a silver BMW were killed this afternoon in a crash on the M4.

From reports I've heard, it was near junction 18 Bath, on the westbound carriageway.
Coincidently, that's also where the infamous "£1.2 million gatso's" are sited. As reported recently, the gatso's bring in that amount every two months?

The scamera in the roadworks at Junction 18 westbound is quite possibly one of the most dangerous I've ever seen. The roadworks are a 40 limit, which feels apaulingly slow even in heavy traffic. You climb a slight hill and pass an off slip before passing under an overpass. You're still climbing slightly and there's a sliproad coming on at an angle that you can't see whether there's anything approching or not. (its in a contraflow, so you're actually on the hard shoulder at this point, right next to the slip which is on a high embankment) Right as you get to the white hatching for the on-slip there it is...a littel box on a stick. From the way it looked I'd say it had view over the motorway AND the slip...So right at the point where the road needs every inch of your concentration you're distracted. I'm not surprised someone died there...

There's a similar camera in the M4 IN Port Talbot westbound. There's a 50mph section for about 3 miles and within 500yds of the end of the restriction is a fixed Gatso. That in itself is a rather stupid place to put it but to add insult to injury, it's placed within 50yds AFTER the on-slip of a junction.

So if you are joining the motorway, you're faced with panic braking in your face, result, traffic jammed up everyday for about a mile of the 3 mile stretch.

An A&E worker friend of mine claims that they know of at least one death that was directly caused by panic breaking at that camera site in the last 3 years.

I would DEFINITELY like to hear more about that. Can you get details for me? Date / name / anything? Or pass my contact details on to your A&E friend. http://www.safespeed.org.uk/contact.html
