This ones for those amoebal intelligetsia in the CSCP scam orifice who actually think that what theyre measuring, ie, speed is actually as important a parameter as the importance theyve attached to it.
Hopefully the Three Stooges will link their last active ganglia and come up with the correct answer this time, however,based on previous performances by these three, confidence it has to be said, is NOT high.

The question: Do you NEED a speedometer to drive safely?

I seem to remember we had a thread on this very subject on the old CSCP board. I shan't predjudice any answers just yet by giving my (hazy) recollections of it, but I think that opinions were divided.

Oh yes, I remember it well. It became particularly amusing when the subject of racing motorcycles came up...

I suppose it depends on how good a driver you are.
In the days when rally cars had navigation equipment driven from the speedo cable (Halda Twinmasters, etc) it was common practice to disconnect the speedo cable from the speedo and drive just on the rev counter to reduce the risk of cable failure.
This was never any problem. Even if the rev counter packed up, as did happen sometimes with the early electrical units, it was still not dangerous to drive without a speedo, even flat out through forests.

I was once co-driving on the RAC Rally and at the end of one special stage my driver asked if I had noticed what the revs were on the long straight in Langdale Forest. I said that we pulled 6400 rpm in top which worked out to 128 mph. This was on damp gravel with several long crests. Exciting - oh yes. Dangerous - not especially so. Did we do a good time - 7th fastest. Did we have a working speedo - NO.

quite easy you do 30 in a 30, if you have a heavy right foot you go faster therefore the lamposts, cars stationary vehicles go quicker past you

so you know within 5mph how fast you are going at any time, without reference to the speedo?

How do you know you are doing 30 in a 30 without a speedo?

if i have a heavy right foot how much faster than the speed limit will the lamp posts go by?

One of the problems with the SCP is they cannot get there stories right, here is a quote oe the Lancashire Camera Site:

A staggering fact is that if a car travelling at 30mph hits a child pedestrian or cyclist, he or she has a 45% chance of survival. At 40mph the chance of survival is just 5%.

This is in complete contradiction of the TV advert, which states 80% are killed at 40mph, and 80% survive at 30mph.

I know, it used to be 50% at 30mph (or sometimes 35mph), and 90% dead at 40mph.

I wouldn't drive on a camera'd road with a speedo failure. Also the difference in feel with unfamiliar vehicles can cause concern until I've adjusted to their characteristics.

I don't believe people who think they can gauge their speed without checking their speedo - the human mind is easily tricked.
