Now after posting, i thought about today - from 10:00 to about 18:30 we had one or two monkey bikes -no plates or helmets on the pavements/roads, racing .And i look at warks web site- "Excessive or inappropriate speed is a contributory factor in one third of all serious or fatal collisions and the partnership is using additional resources that are not detracting from other policing"

Good, still didn't mean that they sent a unit.

Next -This enables Warwickshire to focus and dedicate resources into road safety issues to make this county a safer place.

like thinking how to hide that bike.
Pity - that bike might have scared the monkeys .

Then i remembersd - i said the fatal words to Leek Wooton when i asked for an incident number " they have not got any plates"
No use then sending a bike / car -nowhere to send the fine

Any chance of a photo? I can't make sense of it...

Had a quick look to try and get a photo before light went.
Second set of dragons teeth in usual place for a Gatso - couldn't see the slabs - if you can point me in right direction will try for a pic.
What I did see was a Nice shiny Volvo sitting in the laybye in front ofthe Farmers Shop ( about 50 yds after the camera hidden by the tree)-full view from the north , but partially hidden from South.
Had a camera, but nowhere to park --unlike these "professional drivers" -
--just waiting for a 44 tonner from the continent to modify the boot.

Forgot to add - will also try to get photo of dragons teeth after camera - amount of rubber is amazing.Definatly evidence that this camera is a safety hazard - if someone else gets a pic please post

Still can't find any web info on road works- but copied a pamphlet from Highways agency "A5 Atherstone to Hinkley Improvements" - copies are available from Highways Agency, and the rest - any one want it ask and i'll post it.
Witherly to Mira --starts 12/sept for 5 weeks - a diversion will be signed
also got this doc scanned, but unable to get it in - do you want a copy Paul?

Not just a photo - an article puting the blame on the scams.

http://www.tamworthherald.co.uk/display ... K=13186919

Between July 2000 and June 2003 - the latest period for which figures are available - there were 35 road accidents on the stretch of road this scheme covers.

A total of 23 were termed 'slight', nine accidents were serious and three resulted in fatalities.

Wonder how many were caused by the "Safety cameras" - still trying to get a safe chance to photo the skid marks on the dragons teeth - more like the markings are obscured by rubber.

The fire brigade are highly critical - but Steve Rumble and his crew at the "Smile Partnership" keep on reaping in the cash, even from near misses as HGV see the scams and brake

space in the article for an opinion - Paul -.
The junction is appallingly designed, why place cameras there at a busy junction without first reducing the speed limit to give vehicles joining a chance to enter safely at a much reduced speed.(Unless money is ain. not safety).
Better still, re engineer to a dual carriage way with graded junctions.

If they did the sensible thing and put an Island there I have no doubt it would make the road much safer……….. But then there would be no need for the cameras, and therefor no revenue!
Scameras make ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££[/quote]

According to the Hghways agency leaflet we've got

Dodwells Roundabout to M69 resurfacing (30/08/2005 for two weeks)
Witherly to Mira (12/09-2005 - for 5 weeks)
Railway bridge and VCanal Bridge rewaterproofing North of Atherstone(17/oct for about 8 weeks)
Mancetter Island Resurfacing ,early Jan 2006 over about 3 weekends

But no new islands mentioned.

Got the usual "THINK" bit on the back - "concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks" - is that so you don't see the scams?

Bit in another local paper about another Hinkley councillor commenting on Stretton Bends and how since the area is too narrow for a DC a bypass is needed.

About a mile or so on the Hinkley side of Atherstone --link too long and i aint had a chance to work it out - type in witherly on www.multimap.com and enlarge till you see PH about a mile from Atherstone -thats the Black Bull - actually Multi,ap shows road as DC - ITS NOT at that point.

ed - can't rightly think where the stretton bends are - must be south of the M69 junction as Hinckley cllr on about them. Can't say i'v seen any bad bends on the A5 ,at least not till near Weedon(even those are gentle).Possibly a figment of the Leics partnerships imagination.

oh... yes its here

had to zoom right in on multimap to find that the teensy village there is called stretton baskerville or something.

and yes there are some bends there...? so what...? they want to put a straight road in and limit it to 40 or 50 like the rest of the a5?! :x

Call that a bend or bends - it's almost straight - thats why i suspect there's crashes - looks straight but no visibility round corners.Must frustrate the pratnerships as the road wanders in and out of the two counties, and there's little space to hide a van.

Now my post on 02/sept re traffic car in laybye - both were looking forward, remember that and something at the time seemed odd.Looking at a post on another heading reminded me of it - it was raining, and they had to turn on wipers to see through windscreen.Question is were they speed checking coming toward them - if so gun was in car being used through windscreen - might be of use to someone.

From survey questions on "Smile Camera Partnership" of Warwickshire

"Fewer accidents are likely to happen on roads where cameras are installed"

Of course the burning of the camera on the A5 may not have been an accident, in which case they ARE telling the truth for once.
On the other hand, it is rumoured that financial restraints in the partnership has forced relaiance on older technology, such as candles to operate the flash, and this could be the cause.
Getting to be a ritual sort of thing this - perhaps some group are celebrating a seasonal ritual - in May ( in time for the longest day of the year) , now november( in time for the shortest day)

oh.. this thread

i actually spied a leaflet when i was at MIRA with info on what they're doing down the a5.

and i'm afraid its mostly resurfacing and bridge works in stages through the first half of next year.

oh and they seem to have changed the poles holding up signs to nice shiny spaceframe things. quite what the advantage of those is i'm not sure but i'll bet cost isnt one of them!

Saw the posts - nice shiny trellisy things - suspect to enable them to get rid of sign that is blocking camera .As i said - camera now toast ( Just toast , for the older musicals amongst us).
Third time unlucky now .

Wonder how much this one will cost to replace - seem to remember last winge from the smilies ( Warwick pratnership) was about £70k( just under 1200 pings)

Edit, to add - the one in the other direction is out in the open - not hidden and it hasn't been touched - don't you think that this would have brain of warwick thinking?
( Still pondering why all speed camera managers talk the same drivel and seem to have first name, especiall the very stupid ones)

I saw on Fifth Gear (or something like that) that the trellis style posts were going to be trialled in the UK.

Basically they are "soft" poles that crumple when crashed into. They did a test with two cars; one radio controlled into the standard solid pole at 60mph and it was very badly damaged, then was spun off the pole by the momentum and spread out in bits. The test with the trellis pole was conducted with a driver, and the pole just collapsed leaving a couple of dents in the car and the driver just got out without even a hint of injury.

If they are installing them now, then it can only be a good thing for reducing death and injury. Bet speed cameras get the credit though...

Not this speed camera - it's a nice shade of smokey black, complete with a plastic cover in case it gets cold after it's warm glow.
