Just when you thought it could not get any dafter.

Good to see healthcare resources are being correctly focused.

Perhaps it should read...

Debbie Lawson, her head so stuffed full of PC nonsense and ideology she doesn't know her own arse from her elbow said: "Cooing should be a thing of the past because these are little people with the same rights as you or me.

<Sarcasm on>Perhaps these 'little people' would like to consider freeing up hospital resources, there's nothing actually wrong with them after all... <Sarcasm off>

There is another solution, as we didn't have any problems with people "cooing" over Baby Rewolf when she was born in July - that is separate rooms which are used for the complete process. Coupled with double security doors with different people authorised to open each set of doors, there was no chance to see anybody elses' baby. It was hard enough to get in to see your own! The only people that went into rooms were doctors, midwives and cleaning staff (after asking), and with a limit of 2 visitors plus children restricted to only brothers and sisters it was very nice and peaceful.

Nothing surprises me anymore, but what is frightening is that a person with that mindset is in the position she is in.

PC bollocks on a mission to ridicule itself IMO. If they're going to be this daft how can they possibly be expected to be taken seriously?

BTW belated congratulations Rewolf.

Woah there! "special care baby unit" =premature & sick babies.

Quote:
people sometimes touch or talk about the baby like they would if they were examining tins in a supermarket and that should not happen

If someone was milling around and touching my baby when it was most at risk of dying through infection I'd go nuts. Lots of nasty bugs are brought into hospital by visitors. Most that I saw couldn't even be arsed to use alcohol rubs provided at entrances & exits to clean their hands. The point (not very well made admittedly) was that people don't have the right to mill around sick & premature babies like its a museum. My wife was tired, frightened, emotional and desperately needed some space & privacy with her baby.

Agree with Rewolf, individual rooms the answer after normal births but special care baby units don't always work like that. Nurses & Docs need to be able to perform lots of obs & assesments quickly to lots of babies. e.g. Chief Medical Officer's report recently showed large increase in Gastroschisis (baby born with intestine out of body) not a situation where you want bugs brought in by cooing onlookers. 'Wot's wrong with him then?'

Go beyond the headlines chaps. :)

My son was in the Halifax SCBU just over two years ago and the same rules were in force then.

It is nothing to do with PC gone maaaad, it is about having a little respect for other people.

They have several small rooms holding half a dozen babies each. It can get very crowded with parents and staff and visitors.

The parents are going through a very stressful time, some have come close to losing their child, others still are.

It is only common decency not to stick your nose in unless you are invited.

I can only assume there is no other news today in West Yorkshire since they have decided to report this drivel.

For the record #1son is now a healthy toddler, making life hell for his older sister and you would never guess at the traumatic start to his life.

If I'm dealing with a sick baby (do get babies with lurgies on occasion and not talking about normal baby dribbles at end either! ) - then will only allow parents around.

If we are talking about gran and gramps visiting new family member in hospital and giving a welcome - then see no problems with this either.

If we are talking about adults and strangers smiling and chatting to baby in the "cootchy cootchy coo - who's a little sweety-pie diddumsy" and so on - this is actually a part of cognitive human development and initialises our development of social skills. Baby usually smiles back at the stranger who smiles for example. Have observed this with all my kids. Have no problem with people smiling at our kids - especially our youngest - who can certainly speed on that horse on wheels we bought her!

Cannot believe some reports I heard on the radio at lunchtime where some women claimed society at large felt they had some kind of claim to their baby - cooing as a right and sort of muscling in on their motherhood? :? :? :? :censored:   Who's brainwashed them... and as for people coming up to feel their bump during pregnancy? :? Do not believe it! Did not happen to Wildy :neko: or any of the wimmin in this family - neither mine
nor Wildy's! :? Never met anyone who claims to have done so - nor seen anyone doing so when out and about!

Recognise everything you said Homer, my youngest spent 4 months in Hope Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary's SCBUs in 1997.
However, what IS of concern is the way this story was handled by the hospital, as well as the press. I have only read the Mails version of this story, and it included a photograph of the nurses quoted in the story. It LOOKED as though they wanted to see themselves in the paper - might not be true, but that was how it looked.

Re. Infections in Hospitals, I have to disagree in respect of the ones we were in. The infections such as MRSA dont live on dirty floors - they live on peoples skin - hands, noses etc.
Whenever we handled our son, we had to scrub up. My wife has eczema, and the bactisoap played havoc with her skin, but she still did it every time - then we see a visitor to another baby come in, and put a dirty ball point pen in the incubator to photograph their baby's size, without washing it first!Infection was then just two steps away from our son then - pen to baby, baby to nurse, nurse to our son - luckily all our nurses were diligent about scrubbing up too. 8-)

We don't have infections anything like reported in the press. Lurgies (virus and bacteria are developing life forces and have built up defences to being zapped by modern medicine - why each flu vaccine is immunising basically against last year's strain. It does not necessarily prevent colds and flu, which explains why patients complain they catch the flu despite the jab. However, it reduces the effects and severity for all vaccinated.

But human bodies are the breeding grounds for all lurgies and providing we abide by a set of rules concerning hand washing at all times - lees chance of lurgy spreading. So - wash hands before touching any food, whilst preparing food, hands, face and general freshen up before your meal and most especially after visiting the littlest room in the house!

New slogan: "Dirty Hands Kill" and according to Wildy :neko: , there is a Swiss and French saying that all politicians and civil servants have dirty hands. (meaning getting to power by scammering means  )

Statistics

When Hospitals talk about x% of infections being brought in.

They neglect to say that y% of those were on patients transferred from another hospital!.

Look familiar to stats on speed cameras?

Looking at Moggie's post reminded me of a story i heard a while ago -
a Frenchman washes his hands before going to the loo
a Brit washes hands after going.

Moral of story - never shake hands with a frenchman
