Per Bolton paper a 61 year old cyclist is fighting for his life afet being hit by a car in the Rivington area at 6.30 am. He received server head injuries (no helmet) and his family are keeping a vigil at his bedside.

The police commented that the cyclist rides at that time each morning and stated that one of the problems is morning darkness. (He also had poor lighting apparently)

The car driver was very shaken by the incident and has been treated for shock per the paper.

Ties in with IG's and Ern's posts - please ensure visibility and if riding - I still think a helmet is a safer option....

I bought my lights with the idea of being able to see where I am going - the road between Staveley and Windermere is unlit.
However, the traffic from behind on Bannerigg is doing 40 - 60 mph, while as a cyclist, the uphill drag reduces your speed to 5-7 mph (once you have run out of momentum from the downhill).
Anyone coming up you behind NEEDS to know you are there for YOUR safety. Lots of moving lights/reflectors are more eye-catching than one - such as a reflective tabard.
An adequate set of lights which enable you to be seen can be had for less than ten pounds. It's money well spent if you venture out in the dark/twilight.

Ernest - i work in an industry in which hi vis is a legal requirement - good quality hi vis can be seen a long way off even with a hand lamp- at night with our jackets there's no hiding place. The quality of the stripes is what counts.I keep an old jacket in the car and on the odd occasion i have had to put it on i still get cars braking a good distance off ( panic i suppose thinking BIB around)- the jacket is not clean ,but the stripes are.
