Believe it or not - we have investigated the odd crunch on this....

Setting off

Find a good place to start – not at a blind bend, steept hill or from behind a parked car! Check the road in front and behind you and obye the golden rule which most capable drivers do – signal if it helps yourself, other cyclists, pedestrians and people in motor cars !

Am going to treat stopping as a quiz for discussion. Our customers have attracted our attention in the past over these… why would that be? :?

Stopping….

.

1.. Where should you not stop – especially in a cycling group?

2. Cyclists (on bikes without sidecars) have a “privilege” over drivers – what is it? And why might a driver scream FOUL over it! And why is the law such an ASS! :?

3. Why might it be a good idea to stay in low gear in traffic? (Had one chap have a nasty spill through this)

.

In a blind spot to traffic coming up behind you - eg having just gone around a left hand bend with fence/hedge on your left.

I'm thinking it is that they can go most places where pedestrians go if they dismount - and thereefore can "cross" at a green man on traffic lights, effectively jumping the lights.

This is a double-edged sword. not sure if you actually meant to say

Well... Pros for low gear:
1: If the traffic stops, responsivity is good - instant acceleration to a few mph compared to a laboured start in a higher gear.
2: The dynamics of your (faster) movement make you more likely to be seen.

Cons...
1: If you are forced to the left, it is far more difficult to "one-side" pedal to ensure your left pedal doesn't clip the curb and spill you into the road.

2: In a low gear you run out of speed quicker by saturating and therefore have to change gear (and might muff the change) in traffic.

OK - as far as setting off is concerned Choose a safe pale and look all around you.
Try to develop a fuller extened twist as you really need to ensure a driver is in no doubt as to your intention.

Left foot shoul be on gournd and rigaigh pedal at about ten to two to ensure momentum on the set off.

Stopping - Please get into the habit of lightly touching the left (rear) brake to ensure a smoother stop, The right conrols the font wheel and I do know form expereince that cyclsit can kil themsselves by emergency stop which involves going over handle bars. Please PLEASE be aware of all hazards and please read John Frankin's very excellent advice on this topic.
