The key question is: do awareness courses work? One instructor admitted afterwards that, although many of us would take more care for a short spell after the course, we were likely to revert to our bad old ways before long. One of us went back to the old habits even before the course had begun: a woman from Hertfordshire took a wrong turning on the way to Warwick and when she tried to make up for lost time got caught by a motorway speed camera.

Thats a no then!

I still think education is the way to go, but not necessarily intensive short sharp shots like this.

I think the problem with these courses is that drivers attend them to avoid the points on their licences, not to improve their driving.

Surely it's better to educate drivers BEFORE the offence rather than after?
What if they dont get caught, and kill somebody BEFORE they get to go on the course?
Anyone who has been out in the heavy snow (where it happened!) this weekend will have some idea what I am on about.
On the M8 I saw drivers in heavy snow driving without lights on!!
On the M90 there were signs saying motorway closed at Junction 4 - it was'nt, but cars and vans were hurtleing towards it at 60+ in driving sleet.
The road signs should have alerted them that the road ahead was likely to contain stationary traffic - it's a good job it did'nt!!!! :x

The question "do these courses work" is not really a sufficiently full question, given the circumstances.

By "work", if it means are people less likely to crash, I should say either unlikely, but maybe more likely.

"Unlikely" to work because most people caught are not necessarily dangerous drivers in the first place, so the course is addressing the wrong audience.

Maybe "more likely" to crash because previously crash-free drivers may now spend too much of their attention to their speed to the detriment of their (more important) awareness of what's going on around them as they drive.
