This topic relates to the Safe Speed page: "SMIDSY".

http://www.safespeed.org.uk/smidsy.html

and

http://www.smidsy.org.uk

The Safe Speed page examines mechanisms resulting in crashes where road users have failed to see one another.

Hi

Great stuff in this page!

I think there's one problem related to SMIDSY that you failed to mention.
I noticed I pick up most traffic thanks to peripheral vision.
Peripheral vision is sensitive to
- movement
- contrasts
Central vision mostly picks up cars in front travelling in the same direction or in reverse way.

Well, there are surely some situations where peripheral vision can be fooled. Both sailors and aviators know well that the traffic that will collide with you is the one you have the most trouble to see: it runs on a converging path and in such a way that it will find itself a the crossing of the paths at the same time as you. Because of this it has no relative movement, it just grows bigger, and peripheral vision doesn't catch it.

It might be different in a car, because converging traffic usually comes from definite roads (rather than any direction at sea or in the air), so as long as you know where there is a road crossing your path, you can have a look (ie use your central vision) towards it.

Still, I would not be surprised if the same problem could not arise in some situations.

What do you think?

FWIW, I have a problem viewing http://www.safespeed.org.uk/smidsy.html because the table that contains the responses is too wide and must be scrolled sideways to be read.

(edited because I forgot to give OS and browser info):
OS: Windows XP Pro SP1
Browser: MS IE 6

How strange! - Thanks for the tip. It works fine here in Netscape and Opera, but not in several versions of IE.

I'll fix it soon.

The "width" problem is now fixed - at least it's working fine from here with a range of browsers including IE5 and IE6.

The cause of the trouble remains a mystery. I hardly did anything to fix it - loaded the page in an editor, adjusted a couple of settings experimentally and saved it back.

Thanks again for bringing it to my attention.
