Worthy "Chat" subject I think...

Just been listening Lennon tribute on R2.

Am a Beatles fan - and felt that solo - Lennon>McCartney could still make memorable music - but that they lost that sharp shiny "edge" which place those LonneonMcCartney Beatles songs as "current" at all times.

But I remember exactly what I was doing when the news broke. I was student at St ANdrews and was putting the finishing touches to an assignment. I did not finish the pieces and the tutors granted us all an extension for submission.! I remember feeling sad, shocked and cmpletely bewildered at the senselessness of his murder. Also remember digging out every Beatles and Lennon album in my collection, and listening again - in some sadness - it was then I really fully appreciated and realised that these songs were timeless masterpieces.

Wildy was still at school and remembers people lighting candles.

So as a tribute to a great songwriter and a man whom no one will fully understand - your fave Beatle song and do you remember what you were doing when the news broke of his death? (In some ways - like Monroe, Kennedy before him and Princess Diana after him - people have vivid memories of an icon's demise - more so than when a family member dies!)

My fave Lennon song - hard pushed - but "Woman", "Girl", "Working Class Hero" and "Imagine" all vie for position for me.

Song was about it not being possible to live wthout those things but commenting that the world at large - including the artist himself - attach too much importance und it lead to conflict.

Ist similar to Bert Brecht comment in his works - another artist with conflict with his idealism und reality.

We have whole collection - und the Mad Doc has the orginal vinyls from his "yoof!" (Ist a magpie - he does not chuck many thing away - he even has his old Dansette to play them on in the attic! )

My fave Beatle record ..."Taxman" Ist so true! Even today! Und "Revolution" was a catchy little number ...there are so many.

But we have a lot of records in collection of about 800 CDs und a couple of hundred vinyls....ranging from Mahler, Grainger, Beethoven, Bach, Satchmo und some other jazzy artists, Atkins, Yanch (aruably best guitarist ever per the likes of Clapton, Knopfler , etc) , Ella Fitzgerald, the croony smoothchers of the "Rat Pack", Beach Boys, Stones, Kinks, Led Zep, ELP, Yes, Rush, Queen, America, Ozark Mountain DareDevils, Doobies, Eagles, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Joe Walsh, Joan Armtrading, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Hollies, Buddy Holly Frank Zappa... Knopfler (und Dire Straits), Atkins und we have headbanging Motorhead und Girls School und works of Genesis before they were too commercial und lost plot.... Ach we have a bit of Dolly Parton as well....und some Motown pieces. Und some more "modern" stuff as collected by kittens....."to keep us with it!" Und countless other jolly good singers/artists.

But even so - we still regard Beatles in very high esteem in all these other extremely talented groups, singers und writers.

Und where was I when I heard.... whole school was stunned into silence in school assembly when Head teacher announced und had to leave the podium....

Edited to add that we have not one Cliff Richard song in collection - maybe one on a 60s compilation CD - but we skip that one!

Und have no items by Will Young or any talentless wannabe from direst of dire "seek a popstar" shows!

Oh don't be daft

Many musicians make social comment through their work, its par for the course. Their own social statuts doesn't mean they cannot empathise.

There's always one isn't there

Bit before my time, although I understand his music was jolly & kept everyone cheerful during the blitz.

Seriously...His music and outlook are obviously intertwined with many people's lives and you have to respect that. An important figure and stood for many good things. But he was no saint. Beat up his wife and struggled to keep 'it' in his pants by all accounts.

Well, here's another one!
I have over 3000, yes, you read it right, 3000 albums and, do you know what? not a single Beatles or Lennon album to be found!
While Dylan was writing songs that are as relevant today as 40 or more years ago, Lennon and Co were either re-hashing what had gone before, or coming up with such "jems" as "She Love You",Yeah,Yeah,Yeah,or what about that other all time classic!, Yellow Submarine" FFS!

I hope it's at least another 25 years before this arrogant hypocrit is inflicted on more discerning ears!

Paltry excuse - have a colleague called Yanch! I got into bother when I kept spelling incorrectly - but ist nothing new ... cannot spell silly words - have mental block - am the butt of familyjokes und ragging on this but ist only like Einstein. He could not handle "simple" either! - only "complicated"

But we have most Jansch works in collection - he ist most super excellent!

We also have some folk music - McTell, Bailey, Black, Stewart, - we have variety for various moods und ambience.

But still rate Lennon und Beatles highly. No doubt IG will come in with seasoned view as quite a decent "VOICE" - he can sing very well. (He ist busy with Christmas choir requirements at moment und have heard that Durham Cop Choir ist receiving "critical acclaim" )


His choir did a Beatles medley once - was very enjoyable. He say song which adapt to more formal/jazzy folky/ rendition und most Beatles/Queen songs do - mean song ist classic which last. he should know - they jazzed up some Gilber & Sullivan und the London Philharmonic und the talenter girly Bond group, Vanessa Mae und Amici have all made classics "chav popular" in wider appeal. Ist not inteneded as derogatory - buit appreciation of how these artists have crossed a barrier und appealed to all taste und culture. Ist marker of excellence.

Und Beatles songs - you can figure skate und ice dance to most of them even Lennon und McCVartney solos.. There are few songs which really allow for innovative lifts und so weiter as these. Did figure skating as young teenager. Was 20 points short (BRAG UND SHOW OFF ) of making rep Swiss team. So was not too bad at the twiddly arty farty stuff But not good enough !

No matter skate und ski faster anyways! You know it make sense SPEED MATTERS!

Dylan has publicly acknowledged "Beatles" und cionvered their songs as they have his.

We also have entire Dylan works in our collection. Varied tase in this family but despite the hugeness - we all share likes. Ist maybe why we are all such close pals as well.


Ist nothing wrong with "Yellow Submarine" They always included a silly song!



He was an aritst und icon of generation. His music will survive beyond he next 25 years. As will works no doubt of Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, Paul Weller, Jagger, Billy Joel, Randy Newman, Mark Knopfler, Freddie Mercury and a number of other acclaimed artists.

They were pop songs FFS, some songs are written just to be fun to sing and listen to.
Robbie Williams has sold a gazillion records and a billion concert tickets in 36 minutes (or whatever) but what is everyone going to think of him in 30 years time - besides what an egotistical prick* he was, that is. Who is going to be looking for the deep meaning behind 'Rock DJ'?

BTW, it's 'gems'.

*This is not my opinion of Robbie, I think he rocks!

Even though many people regard it an an inspirational song, "Imagine" is essentially preaching communism and atheism.

I don't question Lennon's cultural significance, or the fact that he was intermittently a talented songwriter, but I do find it objectionable that way he has joined Princess Diana in being regarded as a kind of secular saint.

He was just a flawed rock'n'roll star, like the rest of them.

I'm no Lennon/Beatles fan either, but fair play to him as a lyricist. Okay, maybe some Beatles songs were a little weird, but I can hardly have a dig about that with my early Pink Floyd albums downstairs. WTF were they on when they did the Ummagumma album? Careful With That Axe Eugene - five words and two minutes of screaming - makes Yellow Submarine seem almost sensible. Still, give me Pink Floyd or Queen over the Beatles any day.

"Imagine" can be taken at several levels -

1. Just musing by Lennon in true Liverpuddlian fashion

2. At face value - words meaning what they say

3. Or at a deeper level. -

"Above us only sky" - well sky can be pretty grey and even a cloudless expanse of blue is a bit "nothing" - so he could be suggesting that if an idealist dreamer's vision of this "Brave New World" is ever acheived - tit'd be pretty darned boring!

"Liverpuddlian lad's " double talk perhaps!


I am sure that if there is a heaven or hell or limbo land and Lennon is peepin in from whichever place admitted him - then he'd be very much amused by all this.

Personally - I enjoyed listening to all the songs again!

As Wildy has posted - we have a lot of albums in the collection - but no Cliff Richard! Though we do - er - have the Shadows! (without Cliff! )

Sorry - tell a lie - we have "Living Doll" with Cliff and the Young Ones - but that's different

Never liked the Beatles or Lennon, despite trying, and liking a lot of music from same era, and of similar genre.

Found the tunes forgettable and the lyrics trite.
