I dunno whether I read it here or on PH, but a very good rule of thumb when considering whether to commit to an overtaking manoeuvre is "would I do this in front of a police officer?"

If the answer in my head is "no", I stay put and await a better opportunity.

it's a good point about the slower vehicle allowing others to overtake - I don't think that is communicated particularly well to new drivers or repeated in 'Think!' type adverts.

There is a huge scope for safety messages to be communicated in that kind of advert, if there wasn't such an endemic problem with exceeding the speed limit then perhaps we would have road safety adverts about non-speeding issues?

Even if you don't subscribe to the view that the powers-that-be play the 'speed' card to the virtual exclusion of all else, and that the 'endemic problem with speeding' is something of their creation, it's patently clear that the 'speeding problem' is not going to go away - so I don't think it's reasonable to blame it for the lack of focus on other issues.

Absolutely. I think good messages are really really key to 'sustainable' road safety improvements.

The 'endemic speeding problem' is a problem with the law and its application, not road safety. No one has managed to link routine speeding with crash involvement.

The 'endemic problem with speeding' comment was deliberately tongue in cheek. I do think the concentration on speeding as the root of all evil is wrong, however I also think that speeding is wrong.

[edit]
I've cut a load out here as I felt it was worth a separate thread.

Well a large number of crazy manoeuvres that I witness are carried out way over the speed limit, usually one particular car wanting to go faster than everyone else and weaving through the gaps to achieve that.

careful now, you don't want to suggest that there may be a link between bad driving and speeding do you?

Bad drivers may break the speed limit a lot, but speeding in itself doesn't make a bad driver.
