Can anyone tell me if pedal cyclists have to display lights during the hours of darkness when riding on dedicated cycle paths separated from the main carriageways of roads? I am not referring here to cycle lanes painted on to carriageways.

Good one....I suppose it's advisable, but as you are not riding on a highway then (legally) why do it? Could get you into trouble if you decide to RIDE accross an intersecting road & not dismount & push. Would cyle paths be classified under 'road' or 'pavement' if separated from carriageway? I would be interested in answer too.

Does anyone know the answer to my question above? It's not a trick - I really would like to know.

I don't know whether it's a legal requirement but as one of the current chav pastimes is putting obstacles on or across bike paths you'd be daft not to.

The general rule seems to be that if it's somewhere the public has access to, then normal road rules apply.
