have the rules for yellow box junctions been changed? It used to be, IIRC, do not enter the yellow box until you have a clear exit? Now it seems to be 'Drive into the yellow box, sit there for a while, and then look bewildered / angry (strike out that which does not apply) when other road users sound their horns at you'.

Now if we had more police about, perhaps they could do something about this, but we don't (we need more police, lets put the camera fines into paying for traffic police) so are there any 'yellow box cameras' to penalise the offenders?

As far as I know, you have expressed the rule correctly - do not enter the box unless your exit is clear. Thus if there are no cars in front of you, you can enter the box to, for example, turn right and sit waiting for the opposing traffic to pass before turning. If your exit is blocked by a car in front of you then do not enter.

I'm not sure I have this right, however - any takers?

As far as i know and remember that's right. Slightly off topic - pity some drivers don't also look at rules concerning box sections outside emergency services

(my bold)

I did not know that bit of the rule, I have learnt something new today.

So perhaps some of the people I described in the OP weren't as guilty as others!

I think possibly the complaint in Zamzara's link is a bit off - by creeping across the box because you know that by the time you've crossed it, it will be clear you are STILL obstructing the junction. Whether or not you actually STOP on the hatchings, you are still entering the area when your exit is not clear. When will people realise that gaining a few extra feet is not the be all and end all?

I can't find the exact text of the law anywhere except on that page, but they claim it this:

Quote:
(1) Except when placed in the circumstances described in paragraph 8, the road markings shown in diagrams 1043 and 1044 shall each convey the prohibition that no person shall cause a vehicle to enter the box junction so that the vehicle has to stop within the box junction due to the presence of stationary vehicles.

Which means it is not an offence merely to enter the junction; the offence is complete only if the vehicle stops.

If you want to turn right you can enter the box and stop due to oncoming traffic as long as your exit is clear.

If you’re going straight across the box then I'd agree with Sixy, because if you enter the box and the cars in front stop before you have crossed the box, then you would be causing an obstruction.

One problem is yellow hatching abuse by road planners.

They design a bit of road which, when busy, completely blocks a sideroad. So they add a yellow box. The only way for traffic from the sideroad to make use of the gap created by the box junction is to use it illegally. Then ensues a fight between the main road users and the sideroad exiters.
