Given that members of T2000 probably tell their kids to behave "or Paul Smith will get them" it's hardly surprising to see a message appear on their "forum" on the subject.

This one has links (obviously not clickable :P they're just addresses) to the van man thread.

I hasten to add I have posted a comment comparing the openness of the Safespeed forum to the T2000 version. Whether it gets printed is another thing.

Given that my old man (obviously with same surname  ) is about three posts down ranting about the school run may prejudice things....

If it does get in, apologies in advance for naming some of the notable dissenters here, tempered by the fact that I am drawing attention to their ability to dissent.

:drink:

They are infuriating. They want debate but only whe people are saying nice things about there cause. I think you need the descentors and any arguement. I honly get between a third and a half of the posts i send in placed on the message board and every one I thnk have be edited.

That poster didn't like Paul using math and logic to prove a point. Maths is a pure science is it not? Transport 2000 use emotion to prove there point. Which would stand up in a court of law?

Toontown2000 site gets about 200 hits a day. When you consider it is linked to by just about every other anti-car and "green" organisations web site its pathetic.

Most of the 200 hits are probably from their own staff and us wanting to have a peek it is basicaly a dead site.

Not worth gettin bothered about. Even their own moderator can hardly be arsed to keep it up to date.

Their name says it all Transport 2000, they are old news. We are Transport2006

Slower speeds improve the capacity of the road to carry more vehicles. The capacity of the road network is increased when drivers approach roundabouts and junctions slowly and smoothly resulting in a more continuous flow of traffic and greater through-flow. Reduced speeds also result in reduced crashes. Road crashes are a major reason for congestion, preventing traffic flowing. More research is needed to determine the cost: benefit of slower speeds in terms of journey time

A thesis by Prof H Simpson, i presume

I think that their "logic" is that if vehicles are slower, then they tend to "bunch" as they do not need to keep to the previous braking distance - hence at a slower speed, you can fit more cars per kilometre lane!

And as long as you carefully ignore all other factors - it's true!!

There is some logic in it but it is contradictory.

1) the MOD have studied speeds in relation to flow for optimising convoys. They found the optimum speed to be 50. This only applies if you are tailgating though (as you do in a military convoy)

2) Slower speeds and even flow make it impossible for traffic to find a space when pulling out of a side road because of the lack of gaps. Also at roundabouts where you have a continuous flow of traffic in one direction.

Don't know about their policies ,but do the rules for their message board contradict the site?

Be factually correct and based on accepted science and understanding.
Not perpetrate myths or misconceptions.
Be relevant to the work of Transport 2000

I think their logic is just plain wrong. It applies at a snap shot in time. Take a picture of the road with traffic at 30mph and another at 60mph and the picture at 30mph will have more (twice as many???) cars on it. However, on the 60mph road, the cars in the picture will leave the frame much quicker and be replaced by more cars that will also leave the frame quickly.

This is another example of them using the wrong metric to try and prove their point. The only metric that matters is flow rate. The number of cars per unit time past a point. This is purely dictated by the gap between each car which as we are always told should be 2 seconds. If you draw a line accross the road, one car should pass it every two seconds irrespective of speed.
