hate to say this but:- no defence of the tyre sealants but, they ARE being supplied in a few cars standard. I worked for a while for the breakdown company responsible for a number of manufacturers (the three years cover you get with a brand new car). Some have run flats and some have the sealant. Sealant first - the official stand point is that if you have the sealant as standard (EG smart) you MUST use that before recovery is an option, saying you don't have it won't work, they know what models have it.

we recently got a smart (4-2) and were not told it had any kind of sealant.... and nor did they provide a can of the emergency seal & inflate stuff (we had to buy our own).

can you confirm what basis you make the EG smart statement on, thanks.

I'm a bit bemused by that one too.

I'd be very disappointed if the Breakdown service refused to attend to my wife in the event that she was unable to successfully deploy the tyre sealant, or accidentally squirted it all over the road instead of in the tyre, or whatever.

How would that be any different to her calling them out 'cos she couldn't get the bolts undone to fit a conventional spare?

I never said they woudln't attend if the sealant didn't work, but that you would be asked to use it before they would attend.
car maufacturers employ a third party to co-ordinate the recovery with the people who operate the vehicles. these are the people that will answer the phone as BMW assistance for example. they are not part of BMW even though they will pretend to be. Each car manufacturer will have different policies. the people on the phone will do what the manufacturers want as it is a disiplinary offence to do otherwise.
Smart and one or two others decided that they would not pay the costs of recovery if the person had not tried the sealant first. It is not unusual for one department EG BMW to actually cover several makes EG Volvo, Land rover and Aston AMrtin are served by the same department.
This I know through working there and being trained on all the manufacturere polices that the company worked for.
now I'll shut up before I say enough for them to be able to find me - which would be bad as they don't want the public to know most of this.

oh all conversations are recorded by the way - usually so the managers can find some way of telling off the assitant in the monthly review.
