Rear brake feather gives you better control on a down hill - if you hit with the fronts - you go over the bars. The rear slight feather just keeps the speed under a smoother and tighter control on steeper downhills - without the sharper hit from the fronts.

Check it out - you find the fronts stop more forcibly and these are in effect the "emergency use" and the rears just keep the speeds in check as and when you need - without the judders.

Got this information from bloke who is a CTC trained trainer and he lent me his hand book for his exam to read through. You can buy this book for £20 from the CTC and it's provided within training fees if you decide to become a trainer.

Also got this from the Swiss guy who is the brakeman for a bobsleigh 4- team too. The brake man is the rear guy in the team and he's the one who controls the speed and safety down the course.

had it drummed into me as kid - rears first, then lightly on front - fronts first - expect bloody nose .( tarmac not kind to nose).
Judders on using fronts - possibly caused by need to look at adjustment of steering head tension - used to be on the old ones - (waits for keen cycle builder to say -oh no)

just noticed this... for anyone who's not sure, all I can say is DON'T do this.
Your front brake does most of your braking. In fact if you watch some motorcycle racing you'll notice that their rear wheels are OFF the ground under heavy braking. The key is to make sure your weight is in the right place before you hit the brakes.

must go out and take a piccie of my favourite one which goes through a bustop layby.... what you're meant to do if there's a bus there is beyond me especially when goiong round it means either on the pavment with passengers getting on/off.. or on the road into oncoming traffic

and who has right of way if you meet a bus coming head on wanting to pull into it i've yet to determine experimentally.

must do the same. There's a contra-flow lane on one of the official london cycle routes. It was nicely separated from the main road. WAS being the operative word. People have now crashed into the poles to such an extent that most of them are now missing and the psychlepath is now a car park. This gives the cyclist silly enough to use this route the option of either riding on the footpath or the wrong way down a, fortunately not very busy, one way street.

Sadly, done by a council, as facilities for cyclists, that we could be forced to use! Another example of the attempted marginalisation of cyclists!

To be fair, how many times a day would you expect to have to give way?

It should be priority to cyclists given the differential in use!

It looks like a residential street, so probably should be 20mph and then cyclists would have no need for a silly lane like that.

But the bollard looks like one hell of a pinch point to me....

No, it's a main road (albeit unclassified) that Stockport Council have decided to put some silly traffic calming chicanes on.

It's the unclass road running left to right across this map:

We can all laugh at the completely stupid cycling "facilities" provided by councils so they can 'tick the boxes'in their replies to central government on what they are doing to improve cycling facilities. There is a marvellous web-site for a Warrington-based organisation with many pictures of various stupidities. However whilst stupidly done, they at least do allow cyclists to cycle on what used to be pavements for pedestrians only, as it is illegal to cycle on the footpath, To me personally, this law might have been OK in 1936, but is clearly completely stupid in 2006, with 44 tonne lorries passing you a few feet away. You will be in fits of laughter when you see the pictures, just like I was. The comments are particularly droll.
