In Bury St. Edmunds they are building a large shopping centre. Guess where...... That's right on a car park. So they are going to increase the number of people coming to the town but there will be less spaces for them to park. :?

Cattle Market appears to have 800 spaces now. The new development will have 850 and is due to open in Autumn 2008.

Want to bet that the Olympic VIP lanes (complete with all the enforcement cameras) are retained after the Olympics for "security" reasons. Remember you heard it here first.

Self aggrandisment is the first priority of our masters now.

Is this a keep up with the jones sort of idea. On another post i saw a council had done something, and shortly afterwards ours had, and it seemed that others had done the same. Ours has lost a large park area to a shopping centre(albeit with a built in carpark on the roof, but with smaller capacity) --no doubt we shall see others doing the same -

A case of great (council planning ) minds think alike , or fool agreeing not to differ??

Retail demand (in real terms) doubled between 1975 and 2000. That means either open twice as long or increase floor space. Or choke.

That's where the increased floor space is coming from - the demand from our pockets.

I'll bet you own more clothes, phones, TV sets, computers and light fittings than your parents did 25 years ago.

But the new development itself is likely to generate additional demand for more than the additional 50 spaces.

I'm not exactly sure why you psoted this (I don't seem to be able to directly relate it to any of the posts nearby).

But of course the retail growth is an indication of a richer society. I think that's a good thing. We can buy better health and education, as well as all those 'consumer essentials'.

And road transport is right at the centre of wealth creation. In fact it's so very efficient that the government gets to grab 3/4 of the cost of fuel as tax, and we still prefer cars to (subsidised) trains and buses. Looks to me like the car is the saviour, not the demon. And to use cars we need to be able to park...

Paul, it relates to the post immediately before - which is why I posted it.

It isn't about keeping up with the Jonses, it is about each town and city responding to the extra demand from its own consumers - or face losing them to the nearest rivals.

I came to Bury St. Edmunds, not praise it.

Problem is -- car parking spaces going down, charges up , thats a recipe for people avoiding shopping centres and losing custom to other towns, especially those that encourage out of town shoppers with spaces and low charges.
Not only that, since we lost parking space and gained a new shopping centre, the supermarket parks are now full early on saturdays, making it easier to go to any out of town supermarket to shop, easy to park, plenty of spaces, and the newer ones have wider spaces.
Another idea for the town planners to take on board.
